Default Losing battle?

Looks like a bit of bad astronomy in the
Google banner today. And while I am on
the subject I found a book recently, the
Complete stories of Saki. I reaquainted
myself with the interesting Sredni Vashtar
then another story looked good, the Toys of
Peace. It suggested model figures of
promenant people instead of toy soldiers.
It was good until it mentioned "Sir John
Herschel, the eminent astrologer"! Ah
well..might have been a typo.

How boring would abstract art be if it had to look realistic?

(When it changes, this link to the Miro-style Google logo may provide more permament context.)

Lets say it can look like anything you like
as long as its scientifically accurate.
(thats right, no more abstracts) BTW does
anyone remember a NASA animation of Voyager
at Jupiter 25 years ago. The planet occulted
a bright star. With diffraction spikes! the
horizontal spike smoothly passed behind the
Planet. Then the star. Then the other
spike gradually passed behind! He He He!

Well, I must say, notwithstanding the smilie, that asking for astronomical accuracy in an artistic style that intends to break away from accurate representation, weakens the requests for good astronomy where accuracy may be expected.

Anyway, off the topic, but related to the graphic in question:

San Jose Mercury News: Logo art so surreal artist's family upset

Quote:
"It's a distortion of the original works and in that respect it violates the moral rights of the artist,'' said Theodore Feder, president of Artists Rights Society. "There are underlying copyrights to the works of Miró, and they are putting it up without having the rights.''

In a written statement to the Mercury News, Google said that it would honor the request but that it did not believe its logo was a copyright violation.

They should be happy with the free promotion.
A lot more people know who Miro was now,
then the day before.

Yeah, talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth. You can't pay for that kind of publicity.

My thoughts exactly. I like Miro, but she is not a well known artist, I would think they would be happy for the PR.

Google falls foul of surrealists

Man with apple on his head slaps them with a wet fish

Joan Miro's family has written to Google to complain, although it is not clear how you complain about a search engine in a surreal way.

In case Google failed to notice, it has found a representation in the form of the Artists Rights Society, whose spokesman lacked an ear in his forehead and who didn't have a melting wristwatch.

"I'm the kind of person who thinks James Joyce wrote 'Trees' (pause) and say so".
"No, Joyce Kilmer wrote 'Trees'."
"SHE DID"?!

I've had some works evaluated by the Miro estates some years back, the most displeasing experience I had in the world of art. Too bad, I love the works of the artist, but those in charge of the legacy...

And in addition to the gender thing, according to this survey:

http://www.artcyclopedia.com/mostpopular.html

(I don't think it's statistically perfect), but Miro was the 21st most well known painter, surprisingly to me, before Gauguin. So I think saying he is not a well-known artist is somewhat of an exaggeration. Maybe compared to Van Gogh and Leonardo, sure.

Considering how often he shows up as a crossword clue, I am not suprised...."Spanish Surrealist..."

Remember 25 years ago CG was in its infancy.. there may well have been technical limitations. The animator of that piece, Jim Blinn gave an interview where he saw the animation on the news, and the anchor said "Here's the video that NASA got back from Voyager today."

To be honest it was the group I was with
tut-tutting over that bit that makes me
remember it. It was in a Horizon show about
the Voyager Jupiter encounter. Also at the
begining was a slow motion take of the launch
in 1977. After a minute of this it was "Oh for
heavens sake!" And I remember Ms Morabito
giving a long speil about her actions in
seeing the volcano on Io. After she stopped
the narrator smarmily said the volcano was
named after her. (A William Franklin I think).
I must apologise for that. Actually I read
a few years ago that the NASA staff scientists
were put out by this. I was gobsmacked, she
was part of the team doing her job!

Miro? Never heard of Miro, but have definitely heard of Gauguin, Caravaggio and a number of other artists on that list. Although it seems that Miro has been dropping away on the list lately, down to 28th from what is there now - the August rankings (which seem quite out of date given we're now in December?)
