Exclamation New! Bad Astronomy Blog in Discover Magazine

(This was an article in the Skeptologists topic, but it's big enough to merit its own topic.)

The BA Blog has a new home: at Discover Magazine

Discover Magazine: Bad Astronomy Blog

Congratulations to the BA.

(Now, maybe when the BA Blog gets Digg'd/Slashdot'd it won't cause BAUTForum to come to a crawl.)

Edit: From the Discover Magazine incarnation of the blog:

Quote:
If you went to BadAstronomy.com and found yourself here, never fear: the BA Blog has moved to its new home at Discover Blogs. The original BA site (with the Moon Hoax debunking and all that) is still online, too.

Briefly, http://www.badastronomy.com was redirecting to the Discover Magazine Bad Astronomy Blog.

At this moment, http://www.badastronomy.com is the BA Blog contents that were moved to Discover. Right now both blogs have the same stuff -- except comments are turned on at Discover. I expect the old blog location to start redirecting soon to the new blog location.

And, for a while recently http://www.badastronomy.com was not found, maybe due to server load.

I think one would be wise to update links to the BA Blog:
Discover Magazine Bad Astronomy Blog

Could someone give me some insight about what is Discover Magazine and what could Phil get out of the decision moving his blog into this huge site?
Oh, and will he be able to change the look and feel, its awfully ugly and anonymous like it is now. Its like he moved from his single home into a skyscraper...

I'd expect him to get revenue. Money. Income. Better than the ad money he got from his own efforts. He's bringing eyeballs and even respectability to Discover. They should reward him.

I'd expect him to get some support. Maybe. I don't know how these things work, but I'd suspect it to be Discover-run servers now, and maybe the bloggers get some infrastructure assistance, and can worry more about writing and less about tweaking the software and responding to reader problems.

And, I speculate. For sure. I don't know. I expect he made a business decision to go with the new home, for business reasons.

Discover is a brand with a pretty good reputation. Wikipedia: Discover (magazine)

Quote:
Discover is a science magazine that publishes articles about science for a general audience. The monthly magazine was launched in October 1980 by Time Inc. It was later sold to the Walt Disney Company in 1991, but in October 2005 was sold again to Bob Guccione Jr., founder of Spin and Gear magazines and son of Penthouse founder Bob Guccione.

Even PZ Myers' Pharyngula Blog notes it in blog article More competition!:

Quote:
If you've been wondering about the mysterious presentiments and portents at The Loom and Bad Astronomy, wonder no more: just head on over to blogs at Discover Magazine page, and lo, there they are. It looks like every print magazine in the universe is realizing that they need a stable of bloggers to provide continuous, dynamic content, and Discover has poached our very own Carl Zimmer, which is sad to say for us.

Now, again, http://www.badastronomy.com/ (home of the old Bad Astronomy Blog) and http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog are redirecting to Discover Magazine Bad Astronomy Blog.

The rest of the Bad Astronomy site is still there, with Bad Astronomy misconceptions, movies, bite-size astronomy, media, and other familiar content.

And I just noticed this blog comment from the other half of the BA couplet:

Quote:
[4:08 PM EDT] Phil is in an airplane headed home right now. He’s had a rough weekend trying to make this move go smoothly while he was out of town at a meeting. He video Skyped me and the Little Astronomer last night at 11:00 pm ET and said he literally didn’t know what to do with himself because he didn’t have access to his blog (it was in the hands of Discover at that point).

I’m sure Phil will be blogging up a storm tonight (after he’s scooped the cat litter, of course - for some reason it really piles up when he’s out of town ). I’ve been following these comments today because I have been a bit anxious over this move myself and on behalf of Phil I want to thank everyone for their overwhelmingly positive and kind comments. Phil will be home in about 3 hours. Stay tuned…
Let's see... 3 hours... posted maybe around 1600 EDT... 1900 EDT arrival... give him some time to decompress... if there's not too much cat poop... perhaps we will hear an update tonight.

Well, I can't find the BA's blog on the Discovery site. The links take me to a page with nothing on it but a notice that "Registration has been disabled". If I go to the blog page, there's nothing about BA there.

What's the deal?

I saw that page briefly at one point. Can't recall where I was intending to go, or how it repaired itself. (Oh, and it's "Discover".)

This has worked many times today, and just worked, for me: Discover Magazine Bad Astronomy Blog

Could it be a cookie problem?

Perhaps you can tunnel down to it, by entering at the Discover Magazine main blog page. There is currenty there a prominent link to the BA Blog.

Phil's returned to Colorado and is blogging at the new place:

BA Blog (the Discover Magazine edition): Discover Bad Astronomy!:

Quote:
Welcome to Discover Blogs, the new home for the Bad Astronomy Blog!

I am very pleased to finally announce my Big News: the Bad Astronomy Blog is now a part of Discover Magazine Blogs.

The BABlog had been the front for my Bad Astronomy pages for over three years. In that time, it grew from a simple newsletter to become one of the biggest science blogs on the planet. For that, I owe thanks to a lot of people, most notably Fraser Cain from Universe Today.

Over time, I’ve received offers from various people and blog collectives to move my blog to their sites, but things never really clicked for me. However, when Discover Magazine talked to me recently, that changed. The magazine has been around a long time, and has a good record of presenting science to people, a goal we have in common. The folks at Discover were warm, friendly, and open to ideas on how to best make sure this move would go smoothly. They were also really great about discussing how to support the blog once things settle down, too.
[...]
But most importantly, nothing will change as far as my writing goes. I will still wonder over the beauty of the universe, still hammer away at chuckleheads who deny reality, and still post the odd cartoon, LOLcat, and David Tennant mancrush stuff I always do. I see this as an opportunity to bring all these topics to an even bigger audience, and I won’t be changing my tune now. If anything, I will concentrate harder on all these things. There’s still so much to do.
More there.

Still no joy. I tried both links (thanks for those). The first just gets me that "registration not required" page, and the second -- which does show the Discovery Blogs main page, has no link to the BA Blog. It does show 80 Beats, Better Planet, Reality Base, and Discoblog.

I also tried searching the Discover site for Bad Astronomy -- and all I found was an article that linked to the old site.

Added: I just sent email to the webmaster. Maybe they have the secret knowledge. Now if I just knew the handshake...

Oh, I've noticed that some readers who've been locked out of commenting on the old blog, probably due to some malfeasance of the anti-spam software, are able to comment on the new blog, for instance JanieBelle.

Maybe there is hope for Sticks.

FWIW, I got into the BA Blog just fine today. I suppose it was just a startup problem.

Welcome to the collective! Bzzz!

For those who still can't get in, the apparent message is: hang in there. Contacting the webmaster, though, might be worth a shot.

Here's what you've been missing:

It appears that the new blog location does not contain a link to the BAUT forum, as the old one did.

He just wrote of one benefit in BA Blog: I’m going to Comic Con!

Quote:
The reason I’m going is that the Hive Overmind (Discover Magazine) is sponsoring me, and I’ll be on a panel discussing the science in science fiction. [...] I’ll also get to hang with several friends (hi A!) which is also cool, especially when some huge faceless corporation is covering my costs. Room service here I come! [...] And let me publicly thank and supplicate to [Discover Magazine] for sending me. I had no idea there were so many geeks on the staff there.

As you might guess, it looks OK for me. I was going to suggest you contact the webmaster, maybe to provide some screen shots, so they could adjust their site -- but I found a problem of my own: all the links in the footer (Privacy - Terms - Reader Services - Subscribe Today - Advertise - About Us) link to the page, the Bad Astronomy Blog page itself.

If you see a generic Discover Magazine Blog error, say one that asserts itself not only in Bad Astronomy, but also, for instance The Loom (or others listed at http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/), it might be most expedient to take it to the webmaster (if you can figure out how -- I can't right now). Writing to the BA would probably work, too (BA contact info).

Ah, I found a contact page for Discover. Webmaster email is: webmaster at discovermagazine.com.

Not long after writing that, I emailed a problem description to the webmaster. This morning I had email indicating the problem was being passed on to someone to fix, and when I examined the links just now, they were fixed.

So, that webmaster email address can be effective. I'd recommend it for minor suggestions that might not need the BA's influence or input to accomplish, maybe yielding the BA more time to concentrate on the major matters -- like content.

Announcement from the 'Science' section of the local newspaper:
Quote:
August 14, 2008
BLOGOSPHERE

Bad astronomy

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/

For more than a decade, astronomer Phil Plait has explored and explained space science, deftly dismantling the various hoaxes and bad research that float around like so much space junk.
His old site is still available, but recently Plait moved his blog to Discover magazine, where it's likely to get more exposure and readership.
