Unbelievably some people think Buzz Lightyear was the first man on the moon, according to the British Telegraph newspaper article

I loved it when he popped Bart Simpson that time.

Duh. Lightyear was second.

Lance Armstrong was first!

I think.

Some thought Louis Armstrong was the first man on the moon.....Hello Dolly....

It amazes me. I can still name each Apollo Mission crew. But then again I was alive to see it all happen.

Tintin was first. Haddock, second.

I can name each Apollo mission crew. I wasn't alive when it happened, I just read a lot.

The thing to remember when interpreting polling statistics like this is that people like me often answer these polls.

My baby Flynn would be delighted to read your comment.
I can see him nodding his head.
He chose the avatar for me.

Okay I have a terrible memory and yes I was there too, but I admit I can't name all the apollo crews. And for some reason, to my shame, keep forgetting Michael Collins name. (Conversations usually go something like "You know, the guy that stayed in orbit during apollo 11 that wrote "carrying the fire". I can remember the title of the book he wrote but not his name... sighs)

But Neil Armstrong, I mean... come on... I thought he was the most famous man in the world. (I remember he was at one time, showing my age)

It's funny--I'm more likely to remember Michael Collins than essentially anyone from the later missions except Alan Bean (and I had to Google his name to make sure he wasn't an "Allen"), Jim Lovell, and Alan Shepard. (Incidentally, on the subject of Google, has anyone else seen their logo today?) I also have to recommend today's reading, The Man Who Went to the Far Side of the Moon: The Story of Apollo 11 Astronaut Michael Collins, which includes excerpts from his notebook from that trip.

Quote:
I am alone now, truly alone, and absolutely isolated from any known life. I am it.

If a count were taken, the score would be three billion plus two over on the other side of the moon, and one plus God only knows what on this side. I feel this powerfully--not as fear or loneliness--but as awareness, anticipation, satisfaction, confidence, almost exultation.

I like the feeling.

Gillian, it's weird. I think he's the most important member of the Apollo 11 crew. (I believe Neil Armstrong said the same thing) I've read his book (although eons ago). But six months from now I'll forget his name again... The name Michael Collins just won't stay in my head... And it's always been that way.

I remember it because my fifth-grade English teacher was named Ms. Collins, her husband's name was Micheal, and she liked mentioning that her husband had the same name as an astronaut.
