At least there was a real issue with Y2K. Sure, it wasn't going to be the end of the world, but there would have been big problems if a lot of programmers hadn't fixed problem software. Unfortunately, the mass media had a habit of wildly misstating the issue (in one case I remember, the reporters were calling it "the Y2K computer virus"!) so it wasn't a great surprise that the scare stories received more traction than they deserved.

I think one of the best things we can do when we meet people who believe the doomsday theories is to say "And if the world doesn't end, do you promise never to believe anything like this ever again?"
