Default Face On Mars Claims Hoagland is a Hoax

In a coded transmission sent via the ESA's Mars Express mission orbiter, scientists received a message from a so-far unidentified Martian named "Clem" who claims that he's been following the brouhaha on Earth about the so-called "Face" on Mars. His statement claims that Martians have long wondered about the marked similarity between the eroded mesa at Cydonia and a legendary lecturer/huckster who has been haunting both Earth-based and Martian radio talk shows. The message also came complete with a depiction of the Martian National Nightmare:

The gist of the message, once translated, was "Who IS this guy?"

Have you not heard. It is believed "Clem" is a tube escapee and is radical member of a sect of Cydonian priests. His efforts to obfuscate the deeper meaning in "the face" are failing thanks to the enterprising efforts of some here. You must realize “the face” is no light matter, so be sure you listen to the talk shows and get the facts.

No, I hadn't heard that.

Once you look at the two pictures side by side though, you really can't miss the resemblance...

Except, unlike RH, the Face seems to have no mouth.

There is a chance I am wrong about "Clem". There is much confussion over there right now as they are busy placing sand dunes on top of the tubes to avoid detection.

I must agree with your facial comparison, as well as, Donnie's anatomical analysis. It might explain his motive for the mustache.

Sounds like an Ellison/Asimov collaboration... which would have been interesting.

Well they were mates:

The story goes that the supercomputer AM hates humanity, but is bound by the three laws of robotics. Thus in true Asimov style AM searches for loopholes in the Laws to torment the humans and preserve them for all time.

Or something like that.

Perhaps it could be a story about robot persecution by hateful humans. Bound by the Laws the robot can only allow himself to be subjected to aeons of cruelty. Eventually the years of torture render him the approximate size, shape and appearance of a mesa on Mars. Semi-functional and ignored by humanity, at Cydonia he waits...

Are you suggesting that they used to grow mattresses in the Martian swamps?

Makes sense to me. Those laws again, for people playing at home:

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
So, any robot must stop a human being from coming to harm, irrespective of any other law. Inaction that allows such is a violation of the first law. Therefore, humans walking around, where they might put themselves in danger must be stopped - plug 'em all into the Matrix, before they can do any damage. Force feed the things a balanced diet, just to be sure.

Go read Jack Williamson's "With Folded Hands" (original short story) or "The Humanoids" (expanded novel).

Actually, <SPOILER> if you go read Asimov's entire series, that's more or less how it turns out. R. Daneel ends up putting everyone in the galaxy into Gaia! <SPOILER>

EDIT: Highlight between the tags to read the spoiler.

The Laws Of Robotics

(according to the Handbook of Robotics, or more precisely, Isaac Asimov):

0. A robot may not injure humanity or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. (This was added after the initial three laws.)
(Poster's Note -- this is generally referred to as The Zeroth Law.)

1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

So, are we saying that the Face on Mars is a robot? Or is it RCH?

Hee hee - actually; that was the basis for the classic Star Trek episode 'I, Mudd" as well, wannit?
Of course; the Alice series (all 500 of 'em!) was a lot better looking than Keanau Reeves.

The picture of the Face is obviously a fake.

It's pointing with the wrong digit.

Yes, I agree. Hmmm....in fact, it is clear that it is not actually his hand as his hand is simply a copy of the real "face" hand which is made even more obvious by the poor color rendering.

Which one is the muppet? The one with the beard? Did any of the muppets have beards?

I think it may be a fake to make Hoagland look a fool but then I think NASA doctored the original face image to expose the conspiracy theorists in their midst.

So there was a conspiracy after all!
