Does anyone know how old the coke bottle story is, or its origins?
The first I heard of it was sometime between 1975 and 1981. Robin Williams, the ABC (Australia) science broadcaster, who has a very quirky sense of humour did an Apollo 11. anniversary broadcast of his weekly "Science Show". It was a significant anniversary so I suspect it might of been in July 1979, but don't hold me to that. Apart from usual bits on the science, technology and significance of the event he included a few left field items. One was some follower of an eastern cult who said that nobody had been to the moon because it was a paradise inhabited by celestrial madiens with fragrant bodies. I am not sure why a teenage boy would remember that sort of thing but anyway.... The other was the dreaded bottle. A man (I think Australian) said something along the lines of if anyone had not swtiched off the stupifyingly boring Apollo 11 broadcast and watched long enough they would gave seen a coke bottle roll onto the screen accompanied by an offstage voice staying "oh ****" or something like it (I assume I can report such a scatological word here). It was a report, rather than an interview, the person gave the impression it was something they had seen first hand, rather than been reported to them. I have no idea to the connection (if any) of this story with the infamous "Una", but they may be room for investigation. Jon |

And the coke bottle story is discussed in detail at JayUtah's website: Clavius.org. |

Could someone here please list what networks in Western Australia covered the complete TX of the moon landing? I'll try and make a few phone calls and get some specific TX times and evidence of any complete repeat telecast from the WA TV stations (and their respective relay stations outside of Perth).

I am not sure what TV networks existed back then. I did not live in Australia then, let alone in WA! The ABC certainly did, and there were a couple of commerical channels as well.
Dwight, the places to start would be the four main boardcast networks in Australia: ABC http://abc.net.au/ Channel 7 http://seven.com.au/ Channel 9 http://ninemsn.com.au/ Channel 10 www.ten.com.au/ Grand lunar I think the issue here is not whether or not what was seen was an internal reflection. This is a highly reasonable suggestion that meets the description of what was claimed to have been seen and the onus is on the proponents of the coke bottle theory to show otherwise. What is interesting is the chain of observation, deductionand communication that led to the publicisting of the "Una" story. If my memory is correct, a version of the story was circulating 25-30 years ago, long before "Una" came to the fore. Some questions come to the fore. Could the man in the broadcast have actually been "Una" (a transgendered pseudonym)? Is the story actually original to "Una" or is there an earlier source "she" heard it from? Is there only one source or did several people jump to this conclusion? I would tends towards a single source, as all roads lead back to Australia and the link from a jumping reflection to a coke bottle is so unusual that the simplest hypothesis, until evidence proves otherwise, is to assume a single genesis. I did some research for JayUtah's Clavius site about the Coke bottle. I read the "West Australian" newspaper for a few weeks either side of the Apollo 11 mission. AFAICR, all the TV networks in Perth carried the moon walk live. They got their feed courtesy of a jury-rigged landline from the NASA station at Carnarvon, as there wasn't yet a coaxial cable across the country. |
