I found the following USENET review of Phil Plaitīs conquest of the Art Bell show Sunday night.

Itīs written by one Spencer W Hunter and posted on June 10, 2002.

URL:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

Quote:

"Congratulations to Phil Plait (of http://www.badastronomy.com fame)
for a *great* appearance on C2C. How refreshing it was to hear a
real voice of reason there for a change! My favorite moment:

Caller: "Do you think the Face on Mars..."
Plait: "No."

My only complaint is that he did seem to pull a few punches. For
instance, while he didn't exactly lay the Heaven's Gate cult suicides
at the feet of Chuck Shramek, he did indicate that cult members were
pushed over the edge by Shramek's erroneous findings. In actuality, I
doubt that Shramek would have had any influence at all without Art
Bell's ceaseless promotion. It is Bell who bears the primary
responsibility, as well as for other damages resulting from his
relentless Chicken-Little promotions of North, Dames, Scallion,
Morton, Hoagland, Deyo, etc. Plait very rightly condemned such fear
mongering without implicating its principle exponent, perhaps out of
deference to his host.

What really came through loud and clear, though, was how much more
profound and interesting the real mysteries of the universe are
compared to the usual crap bandied about on Bell's show. Though Noory
tried unsuccessfully to put words in Plait's mouth (as in the possible
existence of Earth-crossing Planet X, and -- foul! just before a
commercial break! -- the existence of a cosmic intelligence), he would
do well to have more guests of Plait's caliber on the show in the
future."

Thanks for posting this!

... he would do well to have more guests of Plait's caliber on the show in the future.

Don't the first two statements kinda explain why the last one may not happen again anytime soon?

Well golly, I'm blushin' here!

Actually, there was a moment I was not sure got heard. When we were discussing tidal locking, and how order can be imposed on chaos, Noory said (right as he went into a break, as noted) something about having it make one believe in a higher power.

I immediately said "I believe in gravity."

I'm not sure that got heard though.

I heard, "I believe in gra . . ."

I pretty much figured that that was what you had said, and why Noory, Cut you Off, at Precisely, that Point!

Next Time, Come Loaded for Bear, and Get him Where he, or his Psyche at least, Lives, in The, so-called, Creation Science!

Oh great! Now people are going to think Phil believes in a god named "Gra".

I wish I had listened to the show. Is it archived on Bell's website?

Yep, but you gotta shell out $24.95 a month to access it.

Hi yīall !

It seems that Big P has posted two responses in the actual newsgroup dealing with Art Bell.

The first one is from 13 June 2002 and can be read at:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

The second one is from 14 June 2002 and can be read at:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

The following quote is from the first one (13 June 2002), the one posted at:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

The quote goes like this:

"> In article <ae3255$ns9$1@oasis.ccit.arizona.edu>, Spencer W Hunter
> <shunter@ptah.u.arizona.edu> wrote:

Thanks! I have received quite a bit of email after the show, and most of it
has been supportive. A few asked about Planet X, unsurprisingly. I missed Ms.
Lieder's show, but I plan to bone up on the topic; I may be on again next
month to discuss it in more detail.

I did receive three hate mails: one from a creationist, one from a UFO
believer, and another from an anti-Big-Banger. I guess I rubbed some folks the
wrong way. The truth will do that sometimes."

(End of quote)

********

Hmm ! You must have been MUCH too nice on the show, Phil ! Just THREE hate mails ?!

Not to get off the subject too far, but isn't it ironic that the above ad was at the bottom of this thread when I read it. As for C2C, I had thought that George was going to do some great things with the show. He was in St. Louis for several years doing a 9-midnight shift, and it was always interesting. It seems that over the last few months, they have been giving too much play to the lunatic fringe, and spent less time talking to credible people. I haven't listened to an entire C2C for months, which is a sad thing since Art Bell was the one who got me hooked on Bad Astronomy, and the BA 8) in the first place. I still would like to think that George does not have as much creative control, and is having his buttons pushed by ratings and accounting guru's. I hope that is the case because George is a far better show host than the product he has produced over the last 6 months or so would lead you to believe.
