For several months, since late March, it has been known that "Apollo 13" was to be released as an IMAX movie. First the release date was "summer 2002", then it was "late summer 2002", then it was "august 2002" - and now the exact date of "August 16, 2002" has emerged ! First the IMAX poster: ![]() And then a comparisment between normal 35 mm and IMAX: ![]() And then a quote: (from http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-032102a.html) "Howard added, "Seeing 'Apollo 13' presented like this, with its clarity of image and staggering dimension, it occurred to me that this is how I had always hoped the film could be seen. I just never imagined that it would become possible less than a decade after we first released it. I give my real appreciation to IMAX not only as a director, but as an audience member. IMAX has truly redefined the experience of movie-going." Hanks, who stars as astronaut Jim Lovell in "Apollo 13," said "When the test sequences were shown to me, all I could think is 'when can I see more?.' To watch a film this way completely immerses an audience and engages all the senses -- it's not the same as any movie-going experience before it, and in a different universe entirely than watching a film at home. Not to mention, it's not just a little terrifying to see yourself eight stories tall." Finally the exact release date: August 16, 2002. How come I know ? Well, "Virginia Air & Space Center" told me so ! At http://www.vasc.org/calendar.html, they write: "Apollo 13 - Opening August 16, 2002!" Remember - Go see it ! |

Boy, I hope this thing comes here. Probably won't be for another half a year though. This is one movie I would go out of my way to see on an IMAX screen.
BTW, if any of you haven't bought the DVD to this movie, then go get it ASAP. If you don't have a DVD player, then buy one of those too. But get it. I just watched it with the audio commentaries by the Lovells on and it takes on a whole new dimension. It's a must-see (and hear).

Unfortunately the IMAX version of "Apollo 13" has been delayed.
It has been moved from August 16 to September 20. http://www.vasc.org/emailvasc.html : "Opening September 20, 2002! It had been less than a year since man first walked on the moon, and Apollo 13 was considered just another routine mission. But what Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert would experience on the third manned mission to the moon was anything but routine. IMAX, Universal Studios and the Virginia Air & Space Center make motion picture history when the Academy Award-winning film, Apollo 13, becomes the first 35mm live-action film ever to be digitally re-mastered for the giant screen! " There will be a special appearance by Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise. http://www.vasc.org/emailvasc.html PS: IMAX has finally created it´s own Apollo 13 page: http://www.imax.com/films/now_playing/apollo13.html <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: Regolith on 2002-07-14 17:12 ]</font> |
