Default another "moon conspiracy"?

I found this little gem over on Ed Mitchell's site. Somehow I'm sure that this isn't "moon base alpha". Exactly what is this "rectangle" that has them all "woo wooing"?

Wonder why we attacked Iraq? For Oil? Ha. We had an agreement with Sadam to operate a Space Launch and Recovery Facility in Iraq.

This allowed us to launch and recover Heavy Lift Saturn X Boosters

wiser.

Yep, that's mighty fine, grade A woo-woo.

Yeah, I know but you see there are some folks who really believe this stuff! So, how do I explain the "rectangle"?... thereby assuring that we haven't been sending up rockets from Iraq, made with captured alien technology to "moon base alpha"! Is it simply that the picture grid (or whatever the correct terminology is) did not receive any data, therefore the rectangle shape?

If there was an agreement in place with Sadam, what need would there be to attack? :-k

I would sure love to see the specs on a Saturn X.

It's not real. It's a JPG compression artifact.

Thanks, no wonder it looked oddly "familiar", similar to Hoagland's Cydonia "buildings". I posted a link to your JPEG explanation page over on Dr. Mitchell's site. I didn't even comment on the rest of the "story"!

I think that article needs a real zoom, of the caliber of the cited image of the mysterious rectangle. Take the closeup image of Phil's eye, and then zoom in on the pupil, oh, 1000%, and you'll see... he's clearly not human. I think Phil's a robot!

Instead of using your eye, you ought to use your the NASA patch on your cap. I bet a few croppings and compressions will probably reveal some hidden message.

Well, I'm not surprized by this reply. Any who are "more expert" than I care to go over to Ed Mitchells and de-bunk some major woo?

You might want to point him to this page.

I spotted that Jay is over there too discussing it, and his idea of a transposed section bsically lines pretty much wiyth my own idea tht it was either a mismtched section or that it is merely a lighter imge that the surrounding ones creating a rectanglar block. Since the rectangle is 45km by 31 km I'd be rather surprised if it really was there. How many bases do you know of that are that big? Especially when it is in a seriously hostile enviroment.

Yeah, but did you notice how, after 4 month & 14 pages nobody has tried to find another image of that area of the moon?

Here's the Clementine image:

http://www.cmf.nrl.navy.mil/cgi-bin/...;filter=415_nm

And here's several recent hi-mag photos of the same area:

1/1/2002 (two images - scroll down)

I just had a look with my Meade ETX at 208X. No rectangle. The double crater Messier (just west of the area in question) has a very unusual ejecta pattern, and several theories to explain it; but why bother with a genuine scientific mystery when you can just make-up giant moon bases?

Sadly, that just wouldn't suffice in this case. You see, you're forgetting that the basic premise is that this "secret base" is being kept secret via advanced (probably alien) stealth technology (in other words one great big 'ole Romulan cloaking device!). The *real* images of the area were captured when this device wasn't working properly and the "true nature" of what is in this area was exposed!. In other words, Count, you're just not thinking like a woo woo! I think you'll fit in nicely here at Bad Astronomy.

Here's a link to my response over on Dr. Mitchell's forum.
