Default Apollo 1

I just noticed that to-day is the Anniversary of the Apollo 1 pad fire in 1967, a tragic and avoidable accident , that has been increasing hijacked by HB's to "prove" that NASA would resort to murder #-o

Anyone want to bet that Gus wouldn't have been 1st on the Moon if he'd lived?

Here's to Gus, Roger and Ed

That's what Deke Slayton wanted, and he was the main decision-maker.

Yes - it's one of the nastier HB claims, but it persists because someone has persuaded Scott and Betty Grissom that Gus was murdered by NASA. Whoever did this should have problems sleeping - in the eyes of his family, Gus should be remembered as a brave test pilot who believed in NASA, and whose death enabled the space programme to succeed - a personal tragedy for them, but one where he believed that the goal was worth risking his life for. Instead of this, they now believe that he was murdered by the people he trusted, because he was going to reveal something that they didn't like. Evil.

For me, this has always been one of the most ridiculous HB claims around - and only confirms to me that the whole thing is based on some paranoid mistrust of authority.

If NASA had wanted to "dispose" of this thorn in their side (although surely the whole point of employing test pilots is that they will speak their mind from a position of knowledge and expertise and let those in charge of the project know where they need to buck their ideas up) the single least sensible option would be to blow up the very thing he was testing, thereby throwing attention onto the incident and inviting goodness knows how many independent reviews and investigations.

Not to mention killing other, innocent guys at the same time.

Or were all the investigators in on the conspiracy too?

That's the nice thing about being paranoid. You don't have to worry about whether anyone is for you or against you. Everyone is against you.

The astronauts of that era flew everywhere. A simple mid-air explosion would have been enough to get rid of him.

Ah-ha! The HBs will point out that NASA already used that trick with Bassett and See, so they had to come up with something different...

Of course, they won't look into any of the details. Never let facts stand in the way of a good story.

That's a really good point about paranoia. Everyone is against you, including your own worse enemy: yourself.

I doubt it, since most of them don't seem to know about Project Gemini. The only HB I've seen mention Gemini is Cosmic Dave over on his site, and that's just a silly question in his '32 things that need to be answered' section about how a whip antenna survives re-entry.

The first time I saw the riginal Fox "documentry" on the Hoax, my wife thought I was going to do something to the TV when the Apollo 1 claim was made ... insensed dosen't even get close!

I would have paid to to see Siebel et al make that claim to Deke Slayton's face .....

As for NASA having a hasnd in Elliot and See's crash , I hadn't realised their infulence spread as far as causing Geese to fly into aircraft! #-o

What do you think they spend all that ill-gotten Apollo money on? Trained Geese. #-o

Just to nitpick, Elliot and See did not crash as a result of geese, trained or otherwise. If memory serves that was Ted Freeman. Elliot and See crashed when their jets clipped a construction hangar while trying to land in abysmal weather conditions. Ironically, the construction hangar housed the Gemini 9 capsule they were due to fly in.

Correct. See was ultimately to blame, though. They reached the missed approach point and pushed through, trying to use a small gap to transition from an instrment approach to a visual circuit and landing.

Afterwards there were comments about See's piloting skills and proficiency.

Here's another nitpik: It wasn't Elliot and See, it was Elliot See and Charles Bassett
