Default GLP Gem

somebody posted this at GLP:

Quote:
In space there exists an almost perfect vacuum, a vacuum that has never been equaled by science on Earth. A chemical rocket uses an exothermic chemical reaction to creat thrust in space. This exothermic reaction creates heat, that is the definition of an exothermic reaction. In this case its a fuel being "burned" with pure oxygen. Since heat energy cannot be radiated into or pass through vacuum, all of the heat energy produced by the space crafts´ engine would remain stored withen the craft, and it would be conducted through the lightweieght aluminum craft. Using pure oxygen to oxidize any material results in a hot, extremely efficient chemical reaction. Since all of the heat produced would be stored in the craft while it was in space, the temperature would have exceeded not only th temperature the astronauts could have endured, it would have melted the craft into a blob of metal.
I know some NASA shill will come on and try to explain this one away, but NASA is bound by the laws of physics, just like the rest of the world. Apparently they are unawre of this.
Now what shold the short answer to this be?

Energy/heat can't pass through a vacuum?? Gee, I must be dreaming that the Sun heats the Earth.

Oh, but he has an answer for that:

Quote:
Yes, it can, but not in the form of heat energy. The sun heats the earth because emr is converted to heat when it is absorbed by matter. No heat energy exists in a vacuum.

Does this mean that you can't let go of a hot potato is space?

Does this idiot provide any credentials or results of experiments performed?

[edit]He must think the electromagnetic spectrum is void of infrared, that is, infrared light must magically come into existence only when it hits an object?[/edit]

[another edit]What a dumb [donkey]! Is the vulgar "a-word" for 'donkey' considered innapropriate cussing on this board?[/another edit]

He seems to be forgetting that most of that heat is going out the backend of the rocket with the very hot exhaust, it's not being "stored" in the spacecraft. The combustion chamber and bell nozzle are cooled by circulating the cryo fuel around them. Any residual heat left after the burn radiates away like any other hot object in space.

The shortest answer is, "Study heat transfer."

Wow, even I know that this is wrong, wrong, wrong. How do some of these GLP posters come up with this stuff? I'm flat out amazed by some of the ignorant things people seem to sincerely believe.

Well, all I can say is I just wonder sometimes why I put myself through GLP every once in a while.

It's a fast moving board so there's always something new, and for sheer entertainment value it's hard to beat, but sometimes I wonder how many brain cells I leave behind every time I close my Internet Explorer window after going there...

Does anyone have a like to the thread this discussion is in? I couldn't find it just by browsing and it sounds like an amusing read.

It's here.

(I'm "SunSpot" on GLP, btw.)

Gee, my office is 20 feet away from about 30 vacuum furnaces. I should go tell our plant manager that the laws of physics have changed and radiative heat transfer has been outlawed. Guess we'll have to go out of business.

It is particularly funny that he said "heat energy canot be radiated" when that is exactly how you get heat transfer in a vacuum.

Ignorance is inevitable. We're all ignorant about something. The problem is not ignorance itself, for which there is a very effective cure. The problem is how ignorance is handled by the sufferer -- in this case by stubbornness, for which the cure sometimes has fatal side effects.

It's one thing to posit a completely wrong model of heat transfer. It's another thing to stick to that model even when it appears not to be right. At some point, a reasonable person will think, "Maybe I don't know as much about this as I thought I did."

And, I would assume Jay that you would have to be pretty shocked by something to actually drop into GLP to leave a post.

Morbid fascination, really. It's like watching someone douse himself with gasoline and then ask for a match. Sometimes you just wanna give him the match to see if he's really going to do what you think he's gonna do.

Well, if he's in a vacuum, apparantly he won't radiate any heat.
