During an EVA Jack Schmitt said"Just took time out for a snack and a little water." I thought he was joking at first (which Schmitt and Cernan did a bit of on Apollo 17) but no mention of it in the journal.

I didn't know they could eat during an EVA but I never gave it any thought before. Seems one would get a little peckish during a long EVA and it'd be easier on the astronauts to design the suit where they could eat then instead of waiting until they returned to the LM.
How was the suit designed to where they could eat and drink during an EVA, if Schmitt wasn't joking?

ALSJ link.

From the A15 part of the ALSJ:

[Jones - "Tell me about the fruit stick."]

[Irwin - "It is Velcroed in, right down from your chin, right in the front. It sticks up so you can grab it with your teeth and kind of pull it up. It slips out of a kind of little cloth pocket. I guess it was probably six inches."]

[Jones - "So you've got the mike in front of your lips and the fruit stick just below that. And the water?"]

[Irwin - "It was a water bag. I never could get any water out of mine. I guess Dave might have got some. That was a problem. Just suck
the water out with a straw."]

[Added]
There is also a training photo of Gene Cernan in the ALSJ, where the food stick and the drinking valve are highlighted.

I new beforehand about it, but had to search for the locations. And I remembered that Eric had just added that photo recently to the ALSJ, so it was mentioned in the Updates section. I'm one of Eric's core team of contributors - mainly mailbombing him with typos, sometimes adding new bits of information - and from time to time I fetch a copy of all the HTML pages to run some automated tools on it to look for HTML errors and formatting inconsistencies. So, when I look for something, I just run a search through all the files - given that I search for some keyword that doesn't appear in all pages...
