"The Big Picture: Accidents In Space
9:30 pm Tuesday 16 July 2002
Space exploration will never be safe. It pushes technology to extreme limits and into the most unforgiving of any environment. In our quest to conquer space, more then a hundred people have given their lives on the final frontier. Many more have stepped close to death as their spacecraft tumbled supersonically out of control hundreds of kilometres from earth. This film reveals those moments of blind terror.
Born in the crucible of the Cold War, the race into space was the most dangerous of all human ventures. Under intense competitive pressure to get results, there were inevitably accidents and disasters in the battle for supremacy in the heavens. Then as public interest in space declined, cost-cutting led to different but equally damaging pressures to get more for less. This film takes on the role of accident detectives examining in compelling detail what went wrong and why, and how the situation was saved. This is the 'black box' of space accidents, showing the chilling chain of events that led to death, destruction, or heart-stopping near misses, like the time Apollo 12 was stuck twice by lightning as it was launched.
Accidents in Space contains rare archive film, powerful and chilling testimony from survivors and compelling analysis of what went wrong on the final frontier."
