dumb blonde, welcome to the board! And no, I don't believe for a moment you're dumb. [-(
I've heard of some of those people - certainly Dr. Mitchell, a very intelligent gentleman who entertains a number of off ideas - but I can't think of spending any money to go see them talk breathlessly about The Hidden Truth... As Carl Sagan once put it, the evidence for UFOs actually being extraterrestrial crafts is "crummy". There's plenty of anecdotes, some forged documents here and there, videotapes of blobs, and confabulated "memories". But where's the indisputable physical evidence? If there was really some highly classified information demonstrating the reality of UFOs, do you think these folks would be permitted to charge money to blab it at a nice hotel? They would be told in no uncertain terms not to. They might be arrested if they tried. That tells you whatever they have is not really classified information. We really might be being visited by extraterrestrial intelligences. But the encounters alleged so far have much more prosaic explanations; the sightings mostly do as well. There are a few confirmed observations, I suppose, which don't have very satisfactory explanations. But ET spacecraft are just one of the alternatives, and they have the additional burden of being really extraordinary claims. The evidence presented for them is not correspondingly extraordinary. It's scant and/or flimsy. The universe is a truly wondrous place as is. I don't feel the need to invoke alien spacecraft to make it interesting. Even though I would dearly love for us to be visited by ETIs, provided they were friendly (or failing that, not bulletproof!) "Foolish humans! thanks for welcome and reply. Yes actually I am quite dumb, which why I come to sites like this to get a balnced view of things. Some of you other guys just engaged in a general sneering , which to be honest wasn't very helpful. I found these snippets on other sites "A few insiders know the truth . . . and are studying the bodies that have been discovered," said Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the moon. Mitchell, who landed on the moon with Alan B. Shepard, said a "cabal" of insiders stopped briefing presidents about extraterrestrials after President Kennedy. + You have repeatedly over the years claimed that you have seen proof of Extraterrestrial highly intelligent life forms. Can you please tell us some more about that? Edgar Mitchell: "Not so. I have never had first hand experiences of ETs or UFO phenomena. Rather, I rely upon the testimony of trusted "old timers" and more modern government and military personnel whose official duties and need to know, placed them in position to have such experiences. I have been briefed by such individuals." I assume no-one is questioning edgar mitchell's qualifications, so why do you think he would be making these claims?

For example, I've seen a UFO. For me this serves as "personal proof" that people are seeing *something*. I haven't a clue what the *something* actually *is* though. I realize that my seeing something can't be used as scientific evidence...it's simply my own observation but it satisfies me (somewhat) on personal level. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, it's only when people start tossing around words like "proof" and "fact" that the problems begin to arise. From what I can see the whole "bru ha ha" over UFOs is simply based on opinion and speculation. I guess I'm waiting for that Fox/CNN interview with the aliens as well! edited once (because I can't spell very well early in the AM!)

He is certainly a brave and accomplished pilot and astronaut. He undoubtedly is quite smart and if he is like other Apollo astronauts he has an advanced degree in some science or engineering field. Few would question his qualifications to have gone to the moon. But he did have a woo woo bent even before he flew. I have read that Deke Slaton warned him to not speak about his sometimes peculiar beliefs while in public and was very upset about his wanting to conduct ESP experiments from the moon. So my question is what authority does he have on the issue of UFOs and government conspiracies. From reading his posts on his own forum, he appears to be uncritically willing to accept many unfounded notions, not the a good thing for ones credibility. Does his walking on the moon make him an expert on UFOs and conspiracies? If Mitchell is an expert, let him demonstrate his abilities by laying out a case. If he has a personal opinion as N C More quotes him, that hardly makes him any more of an expert than you or I, although his education might give him a greater ability to articulate his position.

Well, Dr. Mitchell is without a doubt an extremely smart person. He holds a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT, no small feat folks. Yes, I suppose that some would refer to him as a tad "woo woo" but frankly, isn't everyone a "closet woo woo" in some regard?
I think Dr. Mitchell's opinion regarding UFOs is significant due to the experiences he has had and the circle of people he has lived his life among. Exactly what he was briefed on and specifically what he knows (that has brought him to point of thinking that the ET hypothesis is a likely explanation for UFOs) I don't really know. However, I'd sure be interested in exactly what that information might be. Personally, I'd love to go and hear him speak.

Conversely, Mitchell’s predilection to believe in ESP and extraterrestrial visitation might have adversely influenced him to interpret anything he might have learned from contacts he made as an astronaut in a less than objective fashion. I have no doubt that Mitchell believe what he is saying is truthful but the fact remains that Mitchell has no evidence, scientific or otherwise, for the existence of extraterrestrial UFOs. When one believes in ESP and ET’s and pronounce warning of a conspiracy and cover-up by the government lasting over 50 years when no evidence exists, one is a Woo Woo. When one’s career and celebrity status is the result of a high profile contribution to the pursuit of rational scientific knowledge, then irrationally accusing the government of conspiracy is an abuse of one’s position.

Anybody can believe anything. There are certainly cases of well-regarded, highly intelligent scientists believing things far outside the mainstream... Dr. Mitchell is in the company of people like Fred Hoyle, Tommy Gold, Brian Josephon, etc., all of whom are known for some radical beliefs which are just plain wrong. It's a grander and more interesting version of the few, the very few, relevant scientists who actually believe in ID and other versions of creationism.
You don't have to be dumb, dishonest, or deranged to believe in stuff like this. Even the smartest human is still just that... human. |
|

|
The difference often is in how someone expects others to react to his beliefs. Dr. Mitchell is quite content that others do not accept his statements as proof of UFOs. He may have good reasons for believing what he believes, but he realizes that may not be good enough for someone else who needs first-order proof and not merely an attestation of someone else's belief.

Thanks guys
its very helpful to me to get some educated opinions, for and against. If I can find out what "proof" they come up with at the conference I'll come back and see what you think.
