The LM in the VAB has 4 contact probes but the one seperating from the CM only has 3.
Is there any way of finding out what happened to it?

Given my powers of observation (or lack there of) it's probably something obvious or it's common knowledge.

I don't think this is any big deal, but trying telling that to my HB buddy.

They deleted the contact probe on the forward strut for fear it would curl up and interfere with egress and ingress.

I think the A11 LM (at least) only had 3 contact probes. I seem to remembering someone commenting on it once before. I'm sure Jay or someone can tell us for sure.

(later) Well, that was fast.

Well, David it looks to me like he beat you by a minute. And it certainly must take longer for your messages to get all the way over here from Japan. I'd be happy to call it a tie.

From http://www.apollosaturn.com/satvhist.htm

"Lunar contact probe installed on forward footpad, would be deleted later so it would not interfere with astronauts' descent down the ladder"

I located the following post by "Andrew" in the newsgroup sci.space.history:

"Its been a while since I have read it but in Buzz Aldrins "Return to Earth" he
writes about the LM contact probe being removed from the ladder leg at his and
Neil's request, so as not to get hung up.

cheers
Andrew"
