Not Even The FBI's #2 Man Could Keep His Mouth Shut.

Ex-FBI second-in-charge W. Mark Felt revealed recently that he was the notoriously secret "Deep Throat" during the '70s.

This was a secret that was supposed to be kept to the grave. But clearly was slipping out in bits & pieces to family, friends & colleagues.

So someone tell me now, how many were supposed to have taken part in this moon hoax conspiracy?

Why was this supposed to be kept to the grave?

Woodward had already said that he would release the name after Throat was dead. It has always been a personal decision on Felt’s part, who has been a prime “suspect” for years. It is a secret primarily of curiosity and some historical interest rather than information that would change anyone’s life, aside perhaps from Felt’s family. Felt apparently is not proud of his roll because it his actions were in part motivated by the political struggles between the White House and the FBI after Hoover’s death. At 91 and in poor health he was probably thinking of his family, who already knew, and didn’t want to leave them with the job of dealing with the revelation after he was dead. It was kept so well because aside from the family only four people knew. Beside Felt there was Woodward, Bernstein, and Ben Bradlee. These three were all journalist who had an ethical duty to keep the secret and also gained some cachet from the fact that everyone knew that they knew who Throat was.

It must be great fun to hold such a secret in plain sight.

My take on it is that when I hear all the so-called insiders that so many HBs claim have blown the whistle on NASA, Felt is an example of a REAL insider who was able to bring down an entire administration.

It shows the difference between a real insider who can get wheels turning and questions asked and a crackpot who used to wash dishes at Area 51.

I think you just answered your own question. (I wasn't meaning permanently secret.)

There was lots of speculation, just as there is speculation as to who might be part of a moon hoax conspiracy.

I think it's significant that he revealed his secret for money. no matter how much NASA's paying you, they can't beat the book deal, right? movie-of-the-week?

I think what is funny about this, is all the conspiracy theorists who connected the dots and figured out it was: Haig, Kissinger, or Erlichman. One guy I just read about this morning figured it out years ago, and no one paid any attention to him.

Keeping this secret was a most amazing feat. There's an adage that the largest group that can keep a secret is three people, and only if two of them are dead.

As implied in the OP, the hoaxers expect it was possible amongst all the participants in Apollo project? Get real.

Right, and this was a fairly limited secret - there was no controversy that Deepthroat existed and he certainly was one of the people suspected. It just wasn't certain who was Deepthroat.
