I had to stay up way past my normal bed time to catch this. My wife just didn't understand what I was laughing so hard about out in the living room.

Hey Grapes, thanks for the stills!
The one thing I noticed from these was that it appears Buzz smacks him with his left fist. Anyone know if Buzz is a leftie? If not, that makes the story even more hilarious! |

I managed to catch the segment this morning when they re-aired last night's episode at 10:00 a.m. - hilarious!! I love that program.
I taped the segment, and this time I was able to come up with a streaming video piece a lot faster than last time - see what a little experience will do for you? http://www.ghostwriter-webs.com/jt/s...ndailyshow.wmv I took the TechTV clip down at the same time I put this one up - again, if anyone from Comedy Central gives me any crap for using their clip, I'll have to take it down as well. In the meantime, right click the above link and choose save as - it's at 320 x 240 resolution, 4:16 in length, 7.8 megs in size. Enjoy!! [ This Message was edited by: Zeit on 2002-10-17 12:50 ] |

By the way, the video is definitely reversed in this one, despite the fact that the words "Zero Gravity" move forward correctly. Check out the TechTV clip if you saved that one from my earlier post - Sibrel most definitely assaulted Buzz's right fist with his chin!

The reversed video was done to set up the "Back -- and to the left" gag (a la Keith Hernandez and Kramer parodying JFK on Seinfeld).
Very funny stuff...

Well, after reading the previous message board replies, on this subject, I can only say this: While I concur with the majority opinion that the Daily Show 'interview' with "Mr." Bart Sibrel was one of the funniest things they have done, I'm disappointed with the quality of the comments being offered by the forum.
"Mr." Sibrel is obviously an idiot, and it's easy to confirm that by checking out any of the web links attributed to him. Instead of focusing on, indeed, the very funny Daily Show segment we should be working on a way to discredit this moron, Mr. Bart Sibrel. Any suggestions? |

Personally, I think the best thing that could happen is if he decided to do a second interview for the Daily Show. |

Hey New Guy, discrediting Bart is as easy and essential as proving that man cannot fly without the aid of technology. When Bart speaks, he discredits himself. Yet, indeed, much work IS being done to discredit his ideas, here and elsewhere.
What are YOU doing to ensure the triumph of knowledge over ignorance? Running around expressing dissatisfaction with the present relevant forums. Sounds like a great plan. |

(No hard feelings?) By the way I think that sibrel was doing it just for fun and to sell videos. He has this "I know more than you and i am just doing this to show you up" smirk on his face the whole time. He might be ignorant to what really happend, but he is a smart man buisness wise.

The most discrediting thing that could ever happen for Sibrel is to have his ideas thrashed in the public eye. And his ego plays right into this--the more interviews he does, the more experts will also be on the air or in print showing him to be, at best, monumentally misguided.
Of course, seeing him on the Daily Show does that, too, and also provides more belly laughs....

He couldn't possibly be the source of the whole Moon Landing Hoax myth, could he? ...This web site initiated in response to him? ...Or be responsible for the myth being perpetuated? Whoa. The human condition is worse than I thought.

I doubt he has a following beyond those who were already convinced there was a hoax. Whether he came on the scene or not, there would always be a small contingent of people with their own reasons for believing the missions were hoaxed. I'd be surprised if he won over any converts. He may have driven a few away though. |

Bart may be a relatively new player in the moon hoax game, but he's believed it for well over a decade. His attempts at recruitment have just become slightly more grand.
As is evident from the rhetoric of his video, Bart is, at least partially, motivated by religeous belief. I know Bart to be a member of The Nashville Church, which he will freely admit. What he'll be less apt to tell you is that his "church" belongs to the International Churches of Christ, or ICOC, a dangerous cult, about which there is a wealth of info on the web. This "church" regularly uses deception in their recruitment tactics and has been banned from most college campuses across the country. It's not surprising that Bart feels justified in his harassment and deception, as his church environment tacitly reinforces the belief that the end justifies the means. Bart probably wholeheartedly believes his schtick, and is supported by a general atmosphere of unreality and elitism at his church. I am not sure whether I am overstepping my bounds by saying this, but I think those who find Bart's behavior puzzling, which is everyone I know, might gain some perspective by knowing this. [ This Message was edited by: conqueror worm on 2002-10-18 03:41 ] |

Thanks Conqueror Worm for the interesting information. We've discussed before on the board whether Bart really believes this stuff or is just out to make a buck off the gullible. Some people think the latter, probably because they just can't accept that someone could be so stupid after talking with folks like the astronauts. Me, I've always been open to the case that he's a true believer. Given the myriads of other nonsense out there people readily believe, I can accept Sibrel as being sincere. Deluded, but sincere. The thing is, once a person has convinced himself of something, it is difficult to give up the erroneous belief, even in the face of overwhelming evidence. Interesting to know that Sibrel has a pattern of maintaining a delusion, and his confrontational beliefs have some form of structured acceptance for him.

I just caught the end of today's Daily Show - they've got more Bart Sibrel for tomorrow's episode! They showed a clip where he says "Satan is the father of lies" - the interviewer gets him to say that Buzz Aldrin has to be the "nephew of lies". Looks like more skewering for BS...I'll warm up the VCR!

My personal correspondence with Sibrel confirms this. He habitually uses fundamentalist Christian rhetoric in his arguments. I am not sure whether I am overstepping my bounds by saying this ... Criticizing religion is usually a bad move, but in this case it does help us understand Sibrel and his zeal. I have noticed that people with fanatical devotion to religion often have fanatical views on other topics such as science and politics. I don't think one causes the other; I think both are symptoms of a fanatic mental disposition. One is a fanatic, and so one practices his religion fanatically. |

The ICOC teach that they are the only church of saved, or heaven bound souls. They are an offshoot of the Church of Christ, and teach that from about 200 a.d. or so until the appearance of the church of christ about 100 years ago, THERE WAS NO CHURCH. No christians, nobody saved, all the churches were getting it wrong and hellbound on ridiculous technicalities. They are the EXCLUSIVE possessors of truth, and the only ones with the ability to understand what truth is, much like hoax believers. Bart probably is a thorn in the side of the leadership at the church, as they like to keep a low profile on anything kooky. But the vast unplowed fields of gullibility among the membership have, I'm sure, afforded him fertile ground in which to plant seeds. It absolutely chaps my hiney that a man can be so self righteous about knowing the truth and serving god when lies and extraordinarily unchrist-like aggression are his calling cards. Anyone whose interest has been piqued should try running ICOC, International Churches of CHrist, ICC etc. through a search engine. You'll likely get ICOC sponsored sites first, but if you search beyond, well, it's a fascinating cult. Probably second only to Scientology in it's insidiousness and ubiquity. |
