A couple of weeks ago, I purchased the Apollo 15 six-DVD box set from http://www.spacecraftfilms.com. I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the quality and organisation of the unedited recordings. This really is a must for any serious Apollo enthusiasts and if the price tag puts you off, there is a cheaper two-disc set available, which features only the most interesting highlights of the mission.

However, there is possibly a problem with some of the video on disc 6 that came with my copy of the box set. On that particular disc is the footage of the LM's ascent stage blasting off from the surface of the Moon. Two angles of this event are shown; Angle 1 is the TV downlink, while Angle 2 is footage taken from the onboard 16mm camera. When I first watched this footage, I was surprised to find that after 8 minutes (7:58 to be precise) the clips finished very abruptly and the front menu came back onto the screen. Surely it isn’t supposed to do that?

I think that there might be a slight flaw/scratch/pit in my copy of the disc that prematurely takes me back to the menu before the end of the video. So it would be a really big help if anyone else here who owns a copy of this box set, could possibly find out for me if the ascent footage is supposed to end at 8 minutes, or if it continues past that point. If the latter is true I will have to get that particular DVD replaced.

Thanks in advance.

Write to Mark Gray of Spacecraft Films. He is normally answering very fast and always willing to help and in case your discs are faulty, he'll happy to help you. Mark is also frequently posting and replying on Kipp Teague's Project Apollo mailing list, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ProjectApollo/

Now about the ascent Camera Angles Stars & such
I do not have any numbers from fifteen myself
I assume touchdown was when the sun was about 15 deg
"Above the Horizion" and the stay was less than 3 days
Next I'll assume takeoff {Ascent} was directed in the same
direction that the landing occured from East Tward the west {in the direction of the shadows?}(Sun Behind Camera Located on?) 4:18 A.M.pst

From "Apollo by the Numbers", http://history.nasa.gov/SP-4029/Apol...ar_Landing.htm
Apollo 15 sun angle at landing was 12,2 degrees
As HUb' correctly stated, landing was east to west, launch the same. That's why the LRV with the camera was parked east of the LM; to minimize the neccessary angular movement of the camera.

I just went to spacecraftfilms.com for the first time today, and I can safely say that I can now fill out my wish lists for the next half-decade's worth of birthdays and Christmases. Too bad I'd have to neglect work and school to absorb it all.
