It's just occured to me; most debunker sites are careful to have links available to HB sites so that the truly open-minded can double-check claims and refutations for themselves. From what I've seen, HB sites don't in general reciprocate in a similarly courteous manner.Wonder why that is??

Hoax debunkers are generally pretty confident about the facts involved and believe an intelligent individual will draw the right conclusion. There also something compelling about the agruments when viewed side by side. You can see how lacking many of the hoax arguments are that way.

A reputable scientist also strives to give a balanced presentation of his reasearch. A scientist will point out weak points of his own theory as well as any counter arguments as points to be resolved with future research. He is conservative in his conclusions making sure that they are derived directly from the data. Hoax believers, being psuedoscientists, do none of this. They borrow arguments from each other and don't really contribute much new information. Their research consists of digging through often obsolete sources to look for that one quote that may support their position. They selectively ignore other evidence and do not submit their theories to rigorous testing. This is why debunking sites present the hoax sites also. Real research entails considering all facts and evidence as best as we can determine them and see how our theories and hypothesis fits into the "big picture".

I would put it more simply: The whole argument about the Moon Hoax rests on holding back information, misinterpreting data, and misinforming the reader about what data there is. If HBs were to actually give a reader all the data by linking to debunking pages, the reader will see that the HB is wrong. Therefore, they don't do it.

Some conspiracists such as Jack White go to great lengths to isolate themselves and their followers from any criticism or genuine expertise. They even threaten critics with legal action -- accusing libel simply for saying things like, "Mr. White doesn't know what he's talking about."

Many conspiracy theorists seem to live in a world entirely of their own devising, with their own set of inference rules and facts. And they seem to vehemently oppose the intrusion of any elements from the real world. Ironically they often characterize themselves as the open-minded ones who see things as they really are.

They prefer the Homer Simpson method of life. "The facts are meaningless."

Is it libel if the criticisms are true and demonstrable?

No. Basically, you only have a case for libel if the accusation is false and has resulted in damages to you (reputation, financial, etc.)

Is it libel if the criticisms are true and demonstrable?

Of course not. If it's true it can't possibly be libel.

Libel must be a statement which, by its very nature, is an allegation of fact. It must be untrue and known by its issuer to be untrue. Honest errors are not libel. Further, it must injure the character or reputation of the victim. People like Jack White who seek public exposure actually must prove a greater degree of injury from libel; Jack White chooses to speak and write on controversial topics and thus he is expected to deal with criticism.

Jack White threatened to sue Clavius for libel because we claimed he was not properly trained in photographic interpretation, certain sciences, and photogrammetry. His claim would not be legally defensible because I have (a) statements White made under oath admitting the substance of Clavius' statements, and (b) recent statements issued by White indicating his lack of such training.

Those who deal with White on a regular basis assure me that this is typical Whitian bluster which is simply his method of dealing with opposition to his findings. White, according to them, is simply an intellectual bully.

Back in the early eighties I was still at high school and remember seeing a pic purporting to evidence of fakery...the one asking how the engine bell of the CSM could cast such a huge shadow on the surface. OK, I was already a space nut by then, and fumed at how a RCS unit in the foreground could be possibly misinterpreted so badly. I know that this photo is still cited as 'evidence 'in some quarters two decades later, and I was wondering if any people had thrown diplomacy out of the window and given any of the high-profile HB proponents (David Percy, Marcus Allen in particular) the rubbishing they so richly deserve in a public forum of debate? I do not in general advocate such tactics but given the high-level profile the whole issue seems to have secured in the public mindset over the past twelve months, perhaps this is what's needed. My pupils at school certainly think so, and have been most voluble in their willingness to participate in such a debate!

I took the Aulis lot on at their own web forum a couple of years ago. Jay joined me a while later, along with a few others, and we all but destroyed the arguments in their book and vid (well, Jay did!). The forum got massive, and then, mysteriously, got 'upgraded', ie it disappeared altogether, only to be replaced by a message list. Some of my posts from this have been moved to a safer location, the bin, so it just shows how much of a debate they really want...

I just wanted to save what's left for the record, as the motives of some of these people can be suspect. In the words of Jack White, you decide.

It is, in fact, typical of people in a range of topics, such as Creationists, Anti-Vaccinationists and Kennedy Assassination Buffs. Web sites of the proponents of such theories have no links to their opponents, but their opponents will link back to them. As the BA said, it's about withholding information, the only way of making their argument look strong. In other words, it's intellectual dishonesty.
