Default Why is that flag not moving?

Hello,

I'm a dutch boy and the last few months I'm reading a lot about the great apollo-project. And of course I ran into many conspiracy theories as well.
There has been written so much about it, that I haven't been able to read it all.
So maybe I have something new here, maybe not.

I was watching this very good documentary "for all mankind" and I noticed the following: after they have set up the flag, one astronaut is walking very close along side the flag. Shouldn't the flag be moving? If I walk at home close to my curtains then they are moving! Maybe there is an intelligent person out there, who can give me a scientific answer to my question.

Thanks

Thomas.

no gravity in space to move it... and if someome pushed it it would still look like its not moving.

Welcome to BAUT! In answer to your question, your curtains move because you disturb the air as you move nearby and the air causes the curtains to move. There is a very good vacuum on the moon, so this can't happen there. Something is needed to move the flagpole or flag.

That's incorrect. There is gravity in space, but more important, I believe he was referring to the moon landings. Lunar surface gravity is roughly 1/6 G. Also, the flag most certainly does move when it or the pole are pushed.

Welcome to the board!

. . . Okay, I have nothing else to say. Your question's already been answered.

okay get in a jet liner then go down by 90 degrees. as ur going down try to get the flag to flap around. i bet all u can do is move it.

and technically u are correct. since this plant is part of space and this planet has gravity. thus there is gravity in space.

Stupid me. All the time, I was thinking it had something to do with the absence of an atmosphere.

Maybe it is moving, but I don't have the right video equiptment to see this. Or maybe there should not be any movement, even under earthlike conditions.

I'm afraid this statement makes no sense. Care to elaborate?

if u go down fast enough it simulates zero gravity. do that and try to find out if a flag waves.

There should be movement under Earth-like conditions, due to the atmosphere. As you move, you displace air. As that air moves, it encounters the cloth flag, which is easily moved by such a small force.

On the moon, there is no appreciable atmosphere. Thus, walking past it has no effect unless you physically touch the flag, or create enough of a vibration through the ground to rattle the pole.

It's going to wave like crazy, because there's still an atmosphere in that plane. With a zero-G effect as you dive, the flag is free to flutter any which way the air moves it from the other folks moving about the cabin, the air conditioning, etc.

Does my simple observation prove the film was shot in a vacuum or are there maybe other explanations for this phenomena.

Gravity doesn't explain everything. For example, why people fall in love.

Gravity isn't the issue. There needs to be some external force applied to the flag to make it move.

Gravity is not the issue. The flag, or anything else for that matter, is not going to move unless an external force is applied to it. In the absence of an atmosphere there is nothing to disturb the flag as the astronaut passes it.

No, it shows it was shot in vacuum.
( I like the line about falling in love )

Well, to be honest it is not my own line. It is from Einstein himself.
Have a look at this site: http://www.famousquotes.me.uk/einstein_albert/

Albert Einstein made many inspirational quotes.
Everyone should read it.
