I was watching their annual Shark Week special, and the "new episodes coming soon, we swear!" promo included a few shots from the Moon Hoax one. I was very excited.

I saw that too. I've recently realized half of what i believe about every day things comes from that show. It's why I now turn the lights out when I leave a room.

Sounds fun, but... what if they pull a "Myth Confirmed"? They have had questionable verdicts before...

I expect that this will be a hotly contested episode. But having done myself some of the photographic and photometric experiments they plan to do (e.g., the scene with them placing the scale model of the LM on a simulated lunar surface), I'm reasonably confident the part that the B.A. and I consulted on will bust the myth. I've been busting that myth for eight or nine years now.

As Jay said (and he would know), that seems highly doubtful.

A couple of times HBers have asked, what if one of the Apollo astronauts came forth and said it was faked, would that change your opinion. The evidence for the moon landings is so overwhelming that I would have to doubt that astronaut, before I doubted the landings. I think the same holds true for the Mythbusters.

I think the best (worst?) they could possibly come up with is a "plausible" for a small fraction of the claims that HB's make. Even if they say it is plausible that the video of astronauts scurrying about the lunar surface could have been faked, a bunch of other "myth busted" results would negate the overall theory that the moon landings could have been faked.

My money is on a 100% "busted" verdict for all their tests, though.

It also depends on how the myth is stated.
I can see lots of "plausibles" if the myth said "it could have been..." rather than if they used the phrase "it could only have been...".

Either that, or there's going to be a big qualifier on the statement.

I think it's probably going to get busier both here and at Apollo Hoax after that episode airs.

Good. I think the show will do the most good for the "fence sitters" or those who haven't ever really thought about the "conspiracy", but hopefully it will also show some HB'ers how silly some of the claims are, and how misinformed the claims can be.

Of course we know it won't convince any hardcore HB'ers... and admittedly the "science" of Myth Busters isn't enough to win me over all the time either.

Still, can't wait!

Right, even among those who wouldn't question the authenticity of Apollo, there are Mythbusters fans who nit-pick the show mercilessly. I expect that to be the case here. Ironically this was only a slight concern in the consultation. If there's no way to avoid criticism, then you do what works best for you. The solution that we presented to the producers for one specific problem was one of several possible solutions -- and we told them so -- but was most likely to capture the majority of behavior. I'm sure people will nit-pick it.

Where did they get that Apollo Astronaut action figure? It would look cool next to my Lost In Space robot.

I finally got around to watching the new MB episode I recorded last week (or two weeks ago? Forget when it aired). Though the episode wasn't particularly exciting (can you tendorize steaks with explosives? stressfull driving > gas consumption), it was exciting to see the astronaut cut-out they had in the lab.

Hey, they had big explosions in the first half of the show already, what more do you want from MB?
Though I would have liked them testing the pineapple tenderizer and a normal meat hammer with the standard machine as well.

That's what disappointed me; they didn't test it with "normal" methods. Some of the extreeme methods "worked" (though the air cannon and dryer steaks looked less than appetizing to me), they didn't show us how well they work in comparison to traditional methods.

Subtle distinction: they didn't show those tests on the aired episode. As a few clip shows have gone to pains to point out, that doesn't mean the tests were not carried out, it just means the producers didn't think they made great TV compared to the other stuff.

Yes, but as a viewer, if they don't show it, it might as well not have occured. They didn't even have to show the tests, if they would have at least listed the results for comparison's sake.

Right; they usually have a chart to show it, but this time they just spouted some numbers. I don't care if it's not interesting to show the test, and I agree with that, but the results are relevant, and take very little time to show.

There's also something I missed during that too. They kept talking about a zero something as some measurement, and I'm not sure what that was.

I wait with bated breath. I wonder if it will bring us some fresh meat? Hopefully said meat doesn't spoil the results of the show for our non-US friends when wandering into the forum.
