Where was the magnetic North Pole in 1492? Or the 1600s when so many voyages were made...or was it all done using celestial navigation?
Saw a National Geographic that said that, at current speed and direction of drift, the Mag North will be over Siberia by century's end.

The Dogon myth doesn't "hang together" at all.

It says "Yet an answer is needed, because the Dogon legends about a companion to Sirius are claimed to originate before any terrestrial astronomer could have known of the existence of Sirius B, let alone its 50-year orbit or its nature as a tiny, condensed white dwarf star, all of which the Dogon allegedly knew." So, it's a bit more than just Sirius having a companion. Still, that link makes clear that the Dogon were far from "uncontaminated".

Well, here's another article debunking the Dogon myth by James Oberg.

BB...if you're that interested in the Dogon myth, then why not use a search engine to locate information? All I did to "find" these 2 articles was to plug "Dogon myth" into the google search engine.

Hmmm....first you stated that the Dogon myth "hangs together reasonably well". I then provided a link debunking that "hang togetherness", and you now say that is exactly what you were looking for?

Forgive me, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Noted. I got sidetracked here from the pole reversal discussion and I thank you again for the efficiency of your web linkage. Dogon was raised as an example of the kind of topic I find interesting. I do though value the extra interpretation and clarification that is often added by the astronomers on this forum, so to some extent I'm trying to find out what 'BAUT' would cite as state-of-the-art in terms of debunking.

It all depends on how you want to interpret my sentences (witness several posts above too.) I was exactly looking for a one page 'debunk' treatise to peruse for my own edification, at no time did I state though that I have (yet) accepted the debunker's explanation of the Dogon myth, and so accordingly it might still 'hang together'. This does not detract in any way from my satisfaction at finding a well put together debunk type explanation; especially if the author can remain detached from the adoption of any kind of entrenched standpoint. I tend to find that extreme viewpoints (on either side) can arise all too frequently in these kind of discussions.

For sure, I have no problem whatsoever if a good clarification or debunk (on here or elsewhere) invalidates any of these type of claims because I do not have a fixed or firm footing in either camp. For me it is possible to enjoy working these things through to some kind of logical outcome.

I thank all on here for their patience and the courtesy of the web links.

Its why I like and therefore cite this myth/story as an interesting example to consider.

Oh, no--one of the most valuable tools of the 17th-Century mariner was the compass. I don't know where magnetic north was, but I do know that the compass was in use by such 16th-Century notables as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh.
