Actually, from one "Future Weapons"-esque show I watched, they ARE developing a weapon like that.

Basically, it would use waves like you get from your TV set to influence your emotions; making you feel depressed, and would lower morale greatly, making the opposition more likely to surrender.

Yes, I know it sounds like either bad sci-fi or a conspiracy theory; but it's the trooooth!

We have those already. They're called F22-A fighter jets.

Well, TV does that already. I guess that weapon has already been developed and deployed into most households.

Er, not at the level that they were claiming.

So they'd turn people into me on a bad day?

Which makes me wonder about chemical weapons. Sure, there are both lethal (nerve gas) and non-lethal (tear gas) chemical weapons. Are there any non-lethal weapons in use or development that have emotional or physiological effects, rather than "physical" (like tear gas)?

LSD was investigated (and tested) as a chemical warfare agent.

The tests were done on unsuspecting people, with some rather unfortunate results. Even in the 1960s such tests were highly unethical.

As far as I know, it was never adopted as a weapon. Of course, by the end of that decade it might have been of limited effectiveness anyway, since a fair fraction of the intended targets would have been familiar with its effects. Might even have enjoyed it...

You think that's bad, imagine using the Mary Jane gas on the opposing army and suddenly all the soldiers get the munchies for cookies and beer.

Well that'd be okay as long as your army wasn't between them and the cookies and beer.

In the Navy I saw a guy take a lethal dose of RF. We had to radiate a Tomcat's radar on the ground to find a fault we couldn't reproduce under normal conditions. We put out over a mile and a half of safety ropes that said DO NOT CROSS on both sides and some fool about halfway down walked right over it and stood there in the beam. One of the chiefs saw him and pulled power on the plane.

We raced out there with the duty vehicle and picked this guy up. He said he felt fine and wondered what all the fuss was about. We took him to our ready room and our medics checked him out prior to taking him to medical and his temp was 102F. (I was there) I knew what he got hit with and kept making sideways googly eyes at him. And he kept saying, "Come on guys! You're creeping me out!"

His break down took eight hours. At the four hour mark his liver failed. He went into a coma two hours later and died two hours after that of "nervous system collapse". The really disturbing part was how "unhurt" he felt for the first hour or so after the fact.

(emphasis mine)

Huh? You "heard rumors", and then posit the claim that it must be a true fact?

First of all, I'd like to see some evidence, not just "some rumors".

Second of all, I'd think that you would like to see the same before claiming it was a true fact.

You are right that i cant give a real evidence about that rumors but i heard the story from my uncle who was a Colonel in Soviet Air Force.May be he was lying or saying the truth. But for one i'm sure that Soviet Union(now Russian Federation) and USA possess secret weapons.

If you want an evidence watch documental films "Red Space".There is video that show how russian scientists test beam(laser or particle i dont know) in research lab.

I don't think so, I can remember reading a similar story in primary school. It was in one of those 'unsolved mystery' compendiums. The tale was set during the Sino-Japanese war (1937-1945) supposedly the army was guarding a riverline with small detachments covering bridges. Then 'overnight' all but the bridge guards disappeared in the manner described above.

Of course neither the Japanese, Nationalist Chinese or Communist Chinese could explain what happened....

I think that it is better to develop new weapons for a global war and mass destruction than to give billions of dollars for stealth technologies and other [EXPLETIVE DELETED BY MODERATOR].

Desimir, welcome to the forum, but please review our rules. As a science forum with a number of young members, we don't allow either political commentary (except as closely related to scientific issues) or profanity. Unfortunately, your post immediately above contained both.

Thanks.
