The first comment left has to be from our dear, departed MoonMan:

"I got this from the NASA site,

On the Moon, temperatures vary from approximately -170C (-275 F) at night (due largely to the long, two week lunar night) to around 140C (280 F) in the day.

So either the astronauts would be frozen solid or medium rare, the landing was a hoax and this proves it,end of story."

So he believes the NASA site when it talks about temperatures (which he erroneously thinks is hoax evidence) but dismisses it when it talks about...well absolutely anything else which confrims the landings took place!

I just cant get my head round the kind of logical dissconnection sometimes required for hoax belief.

Leave it to the HBers to cloud over such wonderful news.

For years 'lost' tapes recording data from the Apollo 11 Moon landing have been stored underneath the seats of Australian physics students. A recent search has uncovered them.

I'm not sure I know what to say, so many images come to mind...

I guess, "Thanks, Aussies, for your posterior contribution to science."

You might say that they've been sitting on the evidence...

Of course! It took them 50 years to fake it!

disclaimer: Tho it only took days to fake all other evidence, and the math error which produced figure 50 is intentional...

Well, I think it's obvious that they had these tapes all along. It just took them some time to edit out the boon mics and the part where neil took off his helmet and shouted at a stage hand that he wanted "one small break for neil, one giant jelly-filled donut for neil's stomache!"

...heh. *anyway* that is really good news. anyone know if they're gunna make the higher deff video available publicly anytime soon? or is it already?

Er, no, it's not the missing video tapes that have been found, but some tapes of data from one of the lunar surface experiments.

My guess is that somebody at HoneySuckle accidentally overtaped the video footage with Burt Bacharach, and doesn't dare to admit his mistake .

Beat me to the "posterity" punch.

I think they took it a little literally when NASA asked them to "sit on this for a little while".

Could have been worse, they could have overtaped them with Tom Jones or Mel Torme or Bobby Vinton or Slim Whitman!

Tom Jones has a link to The Art Of Noise, so respect.

Swap Tom Jones for Julio Iglesias.

Oh wait, this is not an award/punish game thread .

It sounded like in the article that the video tapes were found too.

Still, if that's the case, then I guess we're left with the mystery of the high-def images then.

Per the article, "Recorded on telemetry tapes, they are said to be the best quality images of the landing (unconverted slow scan TV) yet to be seen by a public still fascinated by the early space race. These tapes were mislaid in the early 1980s on their way to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland."

Image = video. Could be a goldmine.

I take it you completed those quote tags manually

If you'd overtape important tapes with Julio, everyone will hate Julio, so in the end it works out fine for somebody who hated Julio all along. I smell a conspiracy .

--------------

I read the article as these tapes being only telemetry, and the other tapes containing a.o. the footage we've all seen but in soùewhat higher quality being somewhere else and still lost.

If I recall from another thread, we should have image quality as good as some of the later missions, 14 and 15 specifically. So not really hi-res so t speak.

No, it just links the discovery of the EASEP tapes with the ongoing search for the SSTV tapes:

Quote:
The re-discovery of the magnetic tapes at Curtin follows NASA's admission in August this year that it no longer knew where to find the original video tapes of the 1969 landing and Armstrong's famous speech to at least 600 million people around the world.

The originals were recorded at three tracking stations - one in the U.S. and two in Australia at Honeysuckle Creek tracking station in the Australian Capital Territory and Parkes radio telescope in central-western New South Wales. Recorded on telemetry tapes, they are said to be the best quality images of the landing (unconverted slow scan TV) yet to be seen by a public still fascinated by the early space race. These tapes were mislaid in the early 1980s on their way to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland.
