I think I put a comment in a different thread that would help here:

It's the anonymity thing. People feel they can say almost anything if the other person/people can't physically reach them ...... and we all know quite a few do it purely for attention.

I know of more than a couple of people who will argue black is white, just for the sheer enjoyment of the argument, not necessarily because they actually BELIEVE it. You put that in the context of anonymity on the iternet, and I guess that could increase by maybe a factor of 10 ....
