My alma mater had a bitter rivalry with a neighboring school. But as both schools were equally incompetent at all sports while I was there, it was not the typical rivalry. The football game between us usually determined who would rank the lowest in the conference and was hence known locally as the Toilet Bowl, with the distinctive outcome awarded to the loser. Now the school ranks nationally in sports, but not necessary because I left.

It's in my alma mater's charter that we not have a football team or athletic scholarships, and our mascot was chosen based in part on the belief that we'd never have any sports at all.

My Alma Mater always lost the rugby game with our traditional rivals, but we always won the after-match drinking session.

My alma mater was pretty good at basketball, but, on the other hand, we celebrated when more than 999 people would show up at Baker Field for a football game.

Meanwhile here at Ole Miss the slogan is

We might not win every game, but we've never lost a party!

Ah, the Tholian strategy: "Let's you & him fight!"

Dvorak lifted "Three Blind Mice" for the New World Symphony.
And then there's the German national anthem, which, IIRC, has had the same tune for over 100 years, but has changed lyrics several times

No. Just as "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Save the Queen" originally had multiple verses, the Deutschlandlied originally had three stanzas. The Federal Republic of Germany merely pruned some of the anachronistic and nationalistic text when the "Deutschlandlied" was adopted as West Germany's official national anthem. See here.

Only the third stanza is official.

Quote:
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach laßt uns alle streben
brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
sind des Glückes Unterpfand;
|: Blüh im Glanze dieses Glückes,
blühe, deutsches Vaterland. :|
The Wikipedia article's translation:

Quote:
Unity and justice and freedom
For the German fatherland;
For these let us all strive,
Brotherly with heart and hand.
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the pledge of happiness.
|: flourish in this fortune's blessing,
flourish, German fatherland. :|
Although my knowledge of German is far from fluent, I've studied the words to the "Deutschlandlied," and I have some issues with the preceding translation. I prefer a less modern, more literal and more poetic translation, which I believe better captures the spirit of the original German.

Unity and right and freedom
For the German fatherland!
Let us all strive thereto
Brotherly with heart and hand!
Unity and right and freedom
Are the pledge of happiness.
|: Flower in the brilliance of this happiness,
Flower, German fatherland. :|

Anyone who speaks German (or English, Gillian and Jay ) better than I please feel free to comment.
