True in any language. APL programmers brag about the semantic density of their language. I really admire APL for its unique formulation. But program code is useful only when it describes the solution to another programmer, so in a commercial setting my rule is "Don't be clever; be clear."
Absolutely; and this applies to open-source, too (I'm involved, in one way or another, in a few small OSS projects, the most notable of which is my own vncsnapshot). Mind you, I'm working on code right now that is clever and obscure - but it's the innermost part of an image processing loop (for displaying medical images), so performance is paramount. So generic code has to take this into account Ew. Reminds me of a prank I pulled a long time ago on a braggart developer who really irritated me over a long period. I edited one of the system header files on his Unix workstation and inserted the line #define 1 0 I let him flounder for a few days, then took it out. The one I always wanted to try but never had the guts: #define open(x,y) unlink(x) You nasty person .The APL code to deal with the index origin wasn't that bad, actually; just declare the system variable ([]IO) local, and set it to the value you want. Not sure I could do much APL coding any more, though; it's been far too many years. Same here. APL is one of those things that makes a hasty exit from your consciousness if not exercised well. Sometimes I've toyed with the idea of downloading an APL interpreter, but since I wouldn't have anything significant to run or implement in it, I never follow through. Likewise for Iverson's J - his modern follow-on to APL. I've wondered about it, but never got around to looking into the details. |

Interesting; his post count is now 1. Odd. (Both posts do show up when you select 'find posts' from his profile, though).
Seems there's a bug somewhere. ETA: Astroetic, we sort of wandered off topic for a bit. Hope it didn't throw you off too much; welcome to the forums. There's lots of other resources as well covering the validity of the space program; we can point you to those if need be also. |

Looks like this thread has turned into its own dll.
