This sort of attitude adjustment is praiseworthy. Well done.
Welcome to a new beginning at the science-oriented BAUT Forum.

Dfrank, I think it is the first time in over 2 years I have been here that it has happened usually it is spirals down to calling everyone an either gullible, uniformed or a stooge. In short congrats.

Indeed, congratulations. Although you no one here is suggesting you have to abandon your theory, it takes intestinal fortitude to make the call you did, regarding actual available evidence at this time. Kudos to you, and I wish you nothing but luck in your search. Meanwhile, we welcome any and all scientific questions. You may find the QnA and General Science sections of great use

Yes, this is an example of real honor. It's okay to say, "I still think this might be true, but I acknowledge it doesn't come up to a scientific standard of proof." People who hear the second part are much more likely to show respect for the first part, even if they don't agree with it.

Those last posts are exactly why I joined BAUT.

I'm happy for you, Dfrank.
I too have had to put aside my interpretation of something (not always astronomy related, though) as new info from others was revealed to me. I didn't want to believe it either, but in the end, I conceded, knowing I was wrong. What I've learned is to be humble when others that have more knowledge on a particular subject try to help set the record straight. I hope your time at BAUT will be long and fruitful, and that you can pass on knowledge to others that come by.

And Jay wasn't the only one to compliment him before that thread.

Regardless of where he may have ended up, I defend the community compliments, wrt this thread. However much we may have seen it coming, the right thing to do was to positively acknowledge such behavior in this thread. We can only do so much, but we did the right thing
Hopefully it will serve to let future CTers know that we are not raptors awaiting prey, but willing to serve reason and science to these conspiracies, and show that "I don't know", and "I was wrong", really ARE honorable answers, and acknowledged as such by the community.

True enough, and I don't begrudge my compliment to him. It's just disappointing to see he didn't actually get the point about "look at the picture" arguments. Given his comments to MR in another thread, it seemed that he did - but apparently his own arguments were the exception in his mind.

I hadn't read the other thread. My comments were limited to what he had displayed in this thread. I don't withdraw them, because they are still valid for this thread and still reflect my feelings in that context.
Put simply, praise and criticism where each is due gives credibility to both. If you're always the critic or complainer, people normalize to that and stop taking you seriously. If you give both, based on sober observation, then people recognize that each is given thoughtfully and without respect to person. They'll listen to you. |
