Default Buzz Aldrin on Larry King

Not sure if it was a repeat, but I saw Buzz Aldrin on Larry King last night with a few other people. One was a well known UFO promoter (big beard, Jewish last name I think) and the editor of Skeptic magazine, and also some ex-senator who believes the Phoenix lights were UFO's

It was interesting, to say the least. They were going on and on about Phoenix lights. Silly me, I thought they were already shown to be flares!

Was this an old interview?

Pete

Werent they flares dropped by a flight of Air National Guard Jets that flew out of a nearby Airbase?

I remember seeing a doctumentary that showed how they simply fizzled out one by one, which is how the 'UFO' supposidly departed.

I'm a vet and have seen those things in use in the field and that is how flares look and go out.

Just my two cents

What did Buzz Aldrin say about the UFO? Did he say it was a panel from the S-IVB?

From the link just posted...

KING: Buzz, what did you see?

ALDRIN: What did I see during the flight?

KING: Yes, you saw...

ALDRIN: We saw one of the four panels, the 99.999. And these are three guys who have flown in space twice and have looked out at the stars and all sorts of things, so believe...

EDIT: Might I add that this means the "UFO" referred to is not actually a UFO, as it has been identified as a panel. Aldren explains the identification in more detail; you can read it in the transcript (link, see above)

The UFO quickly became an IFO.

Some other gems:

Quote:
FOX: OK. I was told by a very close source of yours that you actually saw something other than that.

ALDRIN: A lot of people have said things that I saw, but that doesn't mean that I saw it.
Buzz even got one wrong:

Quote:
KING: In your years of flying, have you seen strange things?

ALDRIN: I was flying a T-33 I guess and I looked out and I saw a star out there. But it wasn't a star, it was Venus.
Buzz is funny:

Quote:
KING: Two distinguished gentlemen, an astronaut, a governor, different views from what you've seen.

ALDRIN: Well, I didn't see what he saw.
I sure know which one I'd rather share a beer with.

No conspiracy here, man. Is there some reason this didn't start out in Small Media at Large?

Was it Stan Friedman? His mug seems to be on the TV screen everytime there is a UFO discussion.

There were two events that night. One occurred around 8:30 as a formation of five lights overflew Phoenix. The other occurred near 10PM. This was caused by flares. Based on what I have been able to figure, the 8:30 PM event was caused by a formation of aircraft flying at high altitude. You can read why here:

http://members.aol.com/TPrinty/AZUFO.html

Enjoy.

BTW, originally the governor made fun of the whole event. He got bumped from office and now he changes his tune. I wouldn't buy anything that guy says.

*nodnods* Pretty much how I had heard it and assumed. I just remember when I saw that image they often show of the 'Phoeniz Lights' the so called circle on TV my first thought was high altitude flares.

I mean one would think if there was a craft, Oh I dunno about the size of the mothership from that TV show V hovering over Phoenix, the news story wouldve been more than a simple UFO Report. I would think we would've responded with a bit much more than that.

Thank you for the linkie by the way

I must be missing something. How is that wrong? Venus isn't a star, it's a planet.

Plus his ensuing remarks about it following him were just an illustration of how a distant object which, due to its distance, doesn't quickly change its perspective in regard to the viewer, seems to "move" along with the viewer's motion.

Is there an audio / MP3 link? Or even a video link?

I'd love to see it. Buzz is da Man!

As Buzz says, the only thing unidentified about what he saw during his Apollo flight was which of the 4 panels it was.

Yeah.

"I looked out and saw a star." Wrong, for a while.

"But, it wasn't a star, it was Venus." Right, in the end.

Yes. That was the one. Now he is considered by some UFO groupies as one of those witnesses you can quote. I doubt he even saw it. My guess is if you checked up on it, he was probably at some govenor's function at the time in question.

Too bad this guy wasn't invited to speak on Larry's show.

Of course, he'd make the former governor look even more like a donkey.

The stanley story has been around since 1997. It was in the Phoenix news times twice but never picked up by the AZ republic. He also appeared at one of the meetings and was treated like a "debunker". People don't want to hear they saw a formation of aircraft. They want to say they saw an alien spaceship. It is much more exciting.

This is precisely the reason why UFO's as alien spaceships will never "go away". People want to see alien spaceships, so they will continue to see alien spaceships. It matters very little weither they are "there" or not.

That reminds me of a story from several years ago when I lived in Birmingham, Alabama. We experienced a bad storm that produced some extensive wind damage. It was initially believed the damage was caused by a tornado, but it was later reported it was straight-line winds produced by a phenomenon known as a microburst. When people heard it wasn't a tornado, they were disappointed. They wanted to be able to say they survived a tornado because it sounds more dramatic.

I'd be more impressed at surviving a mirco-burst, those things are way more nasty than a Tornado... or course less people know about them too. Up until the mid to late 80's we didn't even know they existed and if it wasn't for some stunning work by a handful of people we still wouldn't. They have the ability to flatten buildings and knock planes out of the sky though, and without special radar they are all but impossible to see!

Yes, it was definitely a nasty storm. The worst hit area was around a golf course near where I worked; trees were knocked down all over the place. I'm not sure of the date but it had to be in the early 1990s. It was the first time most of us had ever heard of a microburst, but we were all familiar with tornados. It was kind of funny; some people just didn't want to believe that it wasn't a tornado.

Here's a nice picture of what a small one can do to trees. While most tend to be small and like Tornados spawn from thuderstorms, those associated with the eye-wall of hurricanes have been known to do this sort of damage to entire neighbourhoods. [shudder]

Calling them 'microbursts' seems to make them seem small and manageable, when they are anything but. Perhaps they should be called 'superbursts' or 'hyperbursts' instead.

It looks like I may have unintentionally led this thread off topic… sorry about that. My intention was only to point out an example of people wanting to believe the more dramatic sounding fabrication rather than the less dramatic sounding truth. In that way my story is an analogy to the Phoenix lights and other UFO stories.

I now return you to your regular programming…

Apparently they are called "microbursts" to distinguish them from macrobursts.

Quote:
The term was defined by severe weather expert Tetsuya Theodore Fujita as affecting an area 4 km (2.5 mi) in diameter or less, distinguishing them as a type of downburst and apart from common wind shear which can encompass greater areas. Dr. Fujita also coined the term macroburst for downbursts larger than 4 km (2.5 mi).
http://www.answers.com/topic/microburst

The term is only misleading because the origin is not well-known. Also, people seem to be unaware of macrobursts.
