I was shocked while viewing tourist website for Mauna Kea, an island of Hawaii, that there was a reference to the Apollo lunar lander being tested there. This is one of the most remote places on Earth. It is rocky, barren, and arid with an altitude of 13,796 ft. Many people describe it as being on Mars. The first road made through the area was built in 1964 around the time of Apollo. Also, I noticed that the landscape looks strikingly similar to the moon landscape pictures at Hadely Pille from Apollo 15. Did they really test the lunar lander on a remote island in Hawaii? Never heard of this.

The book Taking Science to the Moon, says "At Mauna Kea the staff had prepared a series of traverses around the volcano's summit that would approximate those the crew would follow on the lunar surface." But, "Putty Mills had modified a local jeep to use as a simulated LRV, a cheaper and less sophisticated version of the Grover and other LRV training vehicles." Quote:

The website was www.americasroof.com/hi.shtml. Just an account of trip to Mauna Kea and the most "dangerous paved road in Hawaii". Where they have an army base at Pokahuloa. Apparently, there's the threat of being hit by artillary shells and the rental contracts on vehicles are void if you travel on Saddle Road.

Looks like a misinterpretation, especially in light of the book extract I mentioned earlier |

So SLF, is there any chance you're going to try and support your claim that Haldey Rille is actually Mauna Kea as the title of this thread suggests?

I have to assume that SLF was not being serious about the claim at the top, and was simply pointing out that at least one of the pictures there reminded him of the hills behind Hadley Rille. In any case, I'm closing this thread, because there have been some complaints about loss of decorum. If someone has anything worthwhile to add, please PM me and let me know what you want to add, and I might open the thread again.
