Yup, it must be for real, after all someone has gone to a lot of time and expense to put together this really slick (and I might add somehwhat formidable) ad for what can only be PX (it's implied in the film), and yes, it is a conspiracy topic because it's all about how how *they* are hiding it from us.... Sigh, will it never end??? "The Shift Is Coming":

There will always be conspiracy theorists and hoax believers as long as there are people left who wish to blame their insecurities, incomprehensions, failings, and frustrations on something other than themselves and the ordinary whims of fate to which we are all subject, and who therefore will always be in need of a scapegoat to relieve them of their personal responsibilities, no matter how irrational that particular animal might be.

Good point, Maksutov. I think I am more amazed at the "professional" looking presentation rather then the content itself. Somenone put in a lot of effort there. ( Beats Nancy's cheesy old website!) Anyway, I just *knew* that PX had nowhere to go but to 2012!

It looked like an advert for a Micheal Bay movie!

I wonder what excuse will be used when nothing happens in 2012? And then what new date will be picked for PX's next arrival?

That page even has a section advertising "Official products" for the end of the world.

The weirdest example of such being "end of the world" maternity clothes.

I happen to not be a subscriber to this planetoid crashing into earth. Nor comet or asteroid for that matter. It just doesn't seem very likely from the current orbital paths (despite the fact that various planetoids in the solar system are still omitted from most interactive orbital trackers these days), its more likely that gravitational alignment of planets in that year will cause a magnetic shift in the ears EM field... lol

--While im not a subscriber to that theory either (and the planets are not in an exact line as documented it should be), it IS interesting to note that the planetary positions DO line up with the Mayan drawing of the planetary positions when they made the prediction...

What have they to do with Planet X? At least they exist.

Ahem..Why would anyone be caught dead (pun intended) wearing "end of the world" clothes in 2012? ;-) OR, if you really believe it will end, why waste your money??? But, anyway, the whole thing is ludicrous and planet X and 2012 is a perfect marriage for the doomsayers. (But WE saw it coming, didn't we?).

I just hope my ipod will still work after the EM field of my ears is shifted.

Seriously though, there have been other planetary alignments. Remember Voyager 1 and 2? It was possible for those probes to visit all the outer planets because just such an alignment occurred. But the Earth's magnetic field was unaffected. There were no tidal waves, no earthquakes, no volcanoes.

This idea that planetary alignments can have any effect at all on earth seems to stem from some people's erroneous view that whenall planets are "lined up" they are somehow CLOSE TO earth.

I have seen some examples of how far the planets are apart with a beachball for the sun, a pea (or was it a large spec of dust?) for earth, an orange for Jupiter, etc... etc...

When you get people to stand at opposite ends of the room to show the orbits of Mercury and Venus, then earth is down the hall and out the door, Jupiter is down the street and Pluto at the far end of the next block (at least!) the sheer scale of the solar system starts to become apparent to them. When you show that the nearest star is across the other side of the continent (or from us in the UK it would be approximately in New York) it starts to show how BIG space is.

Then show how you can hardly show the moon's orbit on this scale, and that the moon's orbit VARIANCE causes maybe 1000 times the influence of the planets (anyone know??) then this helps to show how insignificant any influence from any other planetary body actually is. Of course the moon is influencing the tides (and earth itself) TWICE A DAY, and orbiting the earth every 28.25 (ish) days. The moons orbit being slightly eliptical means this influence varies by FAR MORE than any planetary effect AND MUCH MORE REGULARLY.

I think that's the gist of it. I'm sure I will be put right by someone if I have something wrong.

Spit has always been a word I associate with woo-woo stuff, because the acronym for a camera RCH was involved with was SPIT.
Smart acronym.

Actually according to Phil's page about planetary alignments the gravitational effect of Jupiter on Earth is on average 1% that of the Moon's and Venus's gravitational effect on Earth is on average 0.6% that of the Moon (the rest together add up to only another 0.1%), the tidal effects are much lower though.

When I get the chance to surf the web I love to go to the fringe sites, great stuff there. 1950's sci fi all over again.

I tried to find it again to post the link but I couldn't find it. I was on a web site talking about 2012 and they noted the Mayan calendar, the movement into the center of the galaxy thing and the full orbit precession cycle. Their take on it?? It is a combination lock on time for our prison. For a brief, (relatively speaking) period the lock will open and we can escape. If `you don't you are stuck here for another 25000 years.

Anybody recognize that one? Can I take it with me when I go?

Good point, but keep them OFF the internet. I don't think you can even attempt to do a sincere search there---just typing in the word "mayan" on a search engine, without INSTANTLY being bombarded by all the woo-woo cr*p BEFORE you can even get to the legitimate stuff...and has anyone noticed, that seem to be about the way it is with many topics, the garbage floats to the top on places like Google and it's a wonder you can even escape with any real knowledge of anything, outside of the weird stuff! Oh well, end of rant ;-)

Default Frustrated with PX, 2012 and other such madness

I'm far more of a periodic lurker than a regular poster on this forum. The reason being that I find I have very little to contribute by way of actual, meaningful information, as this post itself will ultimately confirm. I have a reasonable handle on the basics of astronomy and I've always been fascinated by it since I was a youngster...for which, oddly enough, I indirectly blame George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry. LOL.

However, all of the Planet X and other doomsday scenario ramblings that I encounter all over the Internet these days is enough to drive one absolutely kazoo. I periodically drop by the forum at Godlike Productions. Mostly it's cheap entertainment from my perspective, but I've made the mistake on more than one occasion of attempting to interject a modicum of reason and reality into some of the EOTWAWKI threads and I am constantly and endlessly amazed by the blatant pigheadedness of some of the louder gloom and doomers! There is absolutely no reasoning with them.

GLPer: "The sun is 20 degrees too far to the south for this time of year.....!!!!!!"

My response: "No, I was outside 20 minutes ago engaged in the politically incorrect act of smoking a Camel cigarette and the sun appeared to be precisely where it should be in the middle of October, to the best of my recollection anyway."

GLPer: "You're a paid gubmint shill then.......!"

My response: "Have you bothered to get up from in front of your computer screen and step outside and have a look for yourself? Have you considered perhaps taking a couple minutes out of your paranoid delusions to get some fresh air and seriously and objectively contemplate the implications of what would really transpire if your initial assertion were correct?"

GLPer: "Yes, I have! And the sun has MOVED.........AND WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE 'CUZ OF IT..........IN 3 1/2 MINUTES!!!!!!......!!!!....IT SAYS SO IN THE BIBLE AND NOSTRADAUMUS <sp? on my part> AND SITCHIN'S BOOKS! AND WHAT ABOUT THE MAYAN CALENDER AND 2012?...????!!!.... I HAVE THE MONOPOLY ON THE TRUTH........AND YOU'RE A PAID DEBUNKER!!!!!......"

And on and on it goes with nary an end in sight. (The above is a rough paraphrasing of a thread I was recently involved in, though some of the language -admittedly, most of it is from my side- has been sanitized to meet with the standards required on this forum and the excessive use of caps and elipses has been slightly reigned in because it's painful to look at otherwise. LOL.)

I'm the first to admit that there are historical and contemporary issues of social and political natures that I find somewhat troubling and would like to see addressed. Unfortunately, those matters always seem to be attached at the hip to the PXers or the 2012ers or whatever else as such and so such real issues are dismissed out of hand by everyone else here in the actual world because of the association with the woo-woo world. (The rules of this forum prohibit me from being more specific than that, and rightly so. Hopefully I've not overstepped said boundaries in this paragraph.)

I also have to admit that my views on a number of more, shall we say, "esoteric" topics has altered dramatically in the last couple of years. (Again, specifics are prohibited here.) Why? Because I feel that it's intellectually, ethically and personally dishonest to maintain a given worldview when it has been confronted with -and virtually destroyed by- a contrary perspective that is based on an overwhelming body of verifiable evidence. Unfortunately, I appear to be member of an exceedingly tiny minority of reformed woo-woos. (Granted, I was never into tin foil hat land or anything, but there were some matters for which I simply could no longer maintain my previous facade about.) Too bad most of my former comrades in woo-woodom have yet to confront their personal disconnects in critical thinking and/or from reality and their venom and lies continue to multiply and perpetuate themselves all over the Internet and beyond.

Anyway, sorry to disrupt this thread with my ramblings. The above exchange from GLP was still fresh in my mind and I saw this thread and couldn't contain myself and had to post. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress...

Jerod S. V2.0, don't sell yourself short...

One thing about it is that we all post things that some others hadn't thought of.
Multiple sources for input is a good thing

Besides, we need all the paid informants we can get. The union has been talking strike and if we dont get a settlement, the guys operating the fake Moon in the Sky device might leave us with a LOT of explaining to do...

What happened in 2003, when Planet X failed to pass last time? Hell, what happeend in AD 70-odd, when Jesus, who told his apostles he would be returning in their lifetimes, didn't?
