For completeness, let me point out:
- Charliebad's last post was removed for offensive language
- R.A.F. - thanks, I didn't so much mean to extract an apology, as to get the newbie on the right track.
- Tuscon_Tim, yes. <sarcasm>a lot of class.</sarcasm>

Charliebad has been banned. Guess we can't accuse him of false advertising, he lived up to his name!

I should also have pointed out that his final post did include something that looked like a sincere apology for playing with your screen name.

Alright, I take it back. Not bad, just disrespectful enough to get him banned.

Wish I could have read that missing post. It must have been bad to get him banned so quickly.

Move along, nothing to see here. Let's either get back to topic or let this thread drift unlooked at for a while.

I only caught a glimpse of it, but IIRC, it was just another chorus of the CTer Serenade: that BAUT is a close-minded old-boys club, that we're "afraid of the truth", etc.

"Pole shift" seems to be the buzzword of choice with the Planet X/Mayan crowd. What exactly is a pole shift? From what I've gathered, people are supposing the magnetic field of Earth will somehow "reverse" and cause untold disaster. I fail to see how a transiting planet can cause the magnetic field of Earth to reverse first of all, and second, even if it did, so what? What bearing does the magnetic field have on everyday life?

Remember space is three-dimensional. Just because objects appear aligned from Earth doesn't mean in they actually are. Also, the objects in question are very far away. There would be no force that could affect the Earth from that distance.

Nothing in Mayan writings state this as the Mayan calendar does not end on 12-21-12*. It rolls over. Your car doesn't end when its odometer hits 100,000 mi/km, does it?

*Seeing the date written in that format almost looks like that it was made up: 1,2,2,1,1,2. Could it be (gasp!) that the whole Mayan calendar idea is a hoax?

Edit: Oops, looks like Mr. Bad was banned while I was typing. Oh well

It didn't look too different from any of a a hundred CT posts I've seen before.

Apparently, he didn't expect to be challenged and took umbrage.

Charliebad has been banned.

[Dorothy]My, people come and go so quickly here![/Dorothy]

Too bad. I was really looking forward to him explaining how this latest version of Nibiru, which according to him had the same orbit as an object that never really gets closer than Pluto, was going to pass by the Earth (again).

I liked the "star/planet" thing, though. "220, 221; whatever it takes."

I certainly am no Niribu apologist, but I can't resist responding to a couple of of triplebird's comments.

1. It diverts charged particles into the van Allen belts instead of allowing many of them to reach the ground. This may reduce cancer rates somewhat. CMEs probably would cause more problems without the protection provided by the magnetic field. I'm not sure if aurora would be more or less obvious. They'd happen all over the globe instead of being concentrated near the magnetic poles, but the charged particle density probably wouldn't be as high

2. Magnetic compasses are quite useful. I suspect they won't work so well when the Earth's magnetic field strength is near its minimum.

The galaxy's gravitational field does keep the Sun orbiting as it does, and thus drags the Earth up and down through the galactic disk. Encountering galactic gas and dust clouds may have significant effects on the Earth's climate.

Of course, neither magnetic field reversal nor galactic dust clouds will cause noticable effects in our lifetimes.

Yes, too bad he got himself banned so quickly. There were two things I would have liked to discuss:

First, if Eris was going to come within the inner solar system (less than the orbit of Jupiter) in five years, it would have to be heading almost straight at the sun at a velocity well beyond solar escape velocity. So, it certainly couldn't be in any kind of conventional orbit. I would have been curious how he would have responded to that (assuming it wasn't just a basic denial).

Second, the evidence is that it is doing no such thing. Of course, he probably thinks there is a grand conspiracy to hide its actual motion by everyone who has examined it through a telescope. My question is why would its position be made public in the first place if they were trying to hide it? After all, it is a lot easier to keep the conspiracy going if nobody knows where to look. Now, all it would take is one person with a good telescope to break the supposed conspiracy - assuming there was any supporting evidence.

He also was apparently unaware that several board members live south of the equator, and can check if there's an unusual object near the south celestial pole.

I have to say I'm disappointed too; this was the first CT that I could have debunked! Oh well.

Thanks for your response; I'm glad you're not a "Niribu apologist" since I was looking for a logical (i.e. non-CT) response as to what a "pole shift" might do. Everywhere I google comes up with the usual CT stuff that a pole shift will cause some cataclysm, but not giving any scientific basis as to why or how. One site, in fact, said it would be the end of the world due to the pole shift causing all electric motors to spin backwards! (But of course neglecting the fact that motors create their own magnetic field through their windings--they're not influenced by the Earth.)

The PBS TV program "Nova" has an episode about magnetic pole shift a while back. You can read all about it here.

Exclamation "Internet may be slowly un-educating the world"????

ZappBrannigan:

I respectfully disagree with your "Internet may be slowly un-educating the world". There are many locations in cyberspace where one can get a very good education. For the astronomically bent, this is one. WebMD is another site for those seeking serious information of the medical bent.

However, like the real life neighborhood the Internet mirrors, there are 'bad' streets for those seeking education to avoid. Zetatalk is one of those.

The web is a place that is also noted for entertainment. Zetatalk can be very entertaining, but only fools seek education there. GLP is another website built for entertainment but hooks the gullible.

Indeed, for the novice, there needs to be an education zone for safe use of the Internet. There is no easy way for the surfer to note what is FUD and what is not.

Ok, that seems to be referring to a post nearly a year back. I'm pretty sure Zapp wasn't being entirely serious in that post, though I have to admit it's difficult for me to tell. Every time I read a Zapp post, I "hear" it in Billy West's ZappSpeak. And if you know Zapp, well . . . .

I'm guessing you aren't familiar with Futurama. I'm referring to the way Zapp Brannigan talks. And he says things like:

"I'm the man with no name... Zapp Brannigan, at your service."

and

"In the game of chess you can never let your opponent see your pieces"
