The Weekly World News once said that aliens mutilated cattle simply because they enjoyed eating beef. I don't know why the aliens couldn't just break into a grocery store; they wouldn't have to go through all the trouble of slaughtering the cattle, and stealing a few steaks from a freezer wouldn't attract as much attention as leaving mutilated cattle in a field.

But I'd like to think of it this way: I think it's an even longer shot to have a star that's a virtual twin of our own sun be our nearest stellar neighbor... and yet that's what we have in Alpha Centauri (although its part of a triplet... A is amazingly similar to our sun, just a bit more luminous but spectral classification is identical, and B is also somewhat sunlike, just a bit cooler K-type.)
Yet neither of them are our nearest stellar neighbor. Which would of course be Proxima Centauri, a star which would never be confused for our Sun.

True, but, theyre all part of the same stellar system. Also, Proxima being the nearest star is like saying Pluto is the farthest planet (although Pluto isnt technically even considered a planet anymore :P) Proxima, like Pluto, has such an eccentric "orbit" that it is actually sometimes much farther away from us than the other 2 components of the system.
