Default Arecibo Reply

Wanted to know what you guys thought about this.
It's posted here because it is indeed crop circles

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arecibo_reply

At first glance it looks like some sort of game.

I'll try and get more information on this seeing as Wiki, isn't too great
and can be altered by any one.

If aliens could fly all the way to earth and put a message in a field, then they could surely have just sent a radio message back. It woulda saved them the trip.

Unless of course they have FTL travel, which would be faster than radio, and are crazy about agriculture...

This was discussed in a previous thread, of course I don't remember which one and I'm bad at searching up old threads...

Either way, the Arecibo reply is pretty thoroughly debunked. People went out in a field and stamped it out.

Perhaps The Chilbolton Face? Before that, in WOW Signal in the Fields (that mostly about the accompanying face).

How can somebody be so smart as to know what the Arecibo message is and yet so stupid that they would go out and deface property?

Oh I dunno- I find it amusing

If that was my property I'd maintain the "Reply" and keep the weeds out of it

Just across the road is the Chilbolton Observatory of the Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio Research. The observatory is packed with intelligent people, many of them no doubt skeptical jokesters, many of them playful students. Many probably know the nearby neighbor farmers, and might even have strong feelings about them, pro or con.

Certainly some, probably almost all, Chilbolton technical people are aware of the Arecibo message. As for defacing of property, for all we know they might have had gracious permission to create their artworks in that field. Or, they might have simply executed the sort of prank witty student-type people have been famous for since higher-education was invented. It doesn't always require stupidity. Sometimes bad judgment is enough. Sometimes a couple pints of alcoholic beverage is enough.

I've read of other crop circles where the property owners put up collection boxes for people visiting the site. I wonder if they make a good deal more in tourist fees than they lose in damaged cereal.

Step 3. Profit!

There actually was a reply to the Arecibo message, and it was reported in at least one magazine, at the time. Shortly after The Message was sent, the observatory received a telegram which read, "Message received. Help is on the way. M13."

[Edited to add] It could have been worse.

I still find it odd that people buy into the crop-circle myth. If its on a human scale and humans are capable of making it (and claim to) then why would anyone think aliens were involved? Were I an alien capable of FTL travel, capable obviously of commanding vast powers then my message to earth would be considerably larger and less ambiguous.

For example... making Jupiter a very larger diner and advertising it by placing a neon sign the size of Saturn in low orbit around it.

Painting the moon yellow and putting a smiley-face on it.

Really complicated 3-dimensional diagrams of how to make a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster etched into every proton on Earth.

Okay that's all I have for now.

Perhaps crop circles are the best you can hope for when your species is made out of meat.

Then charge money, and put up a sign with tiny print saying "for entertainment only".

It started out that Crop Circles were supposed to be Where Craft landed- Leaving circles.

Later, they evolved into complex patterns.

It seems alien craft require corn or wheat in order to land.

That's obviously a footprint from an alien - not a spaceship.

Ugh. Crop circles in corn. If it was mature, it would make for an awful amount of work for a good-sized crop circle. On the other hand, I suppose that might be the point.

So, wheat and corn only, huh? What properties do have or lack as opposed to, say, cane and barley which make them especially suited for alien craft landing sites?

Actually, they land there to restock their food supplies. Got to keep the tribbles feed.
