I don't think it has anything to do with pareidolia. It just wishful thinking.

Don't take me wrong , I don't think it is wood. It is very probably a slab of rock upturned or something like that. But people , it just look like a piece of wood to me, so it is not astonishing some people cry "wood" , it is wood !. And so what ? It just prove how smarter we are in this forum.

You have to admit though, it is an intriguing photo, no matter how you look at it. I know it isn't wood, and in all likelyhood a rock or edge of one, but it is an odd rock and stands out among the rest of the scene. who doesn't love a good mystery or story though, besides, the CT'ers are running out of material.

URL to paulcmuir's image for those that (like me) don't see the image. It made me smile. And cringe.

Really - it isn't. Anyone who has followed Opportunity around Meridiani Planum would recognise it, immediately, for what it was. We've seen hundreds of photographs of rock showing that sort of layering. that one slab was stuck up at an angle exhibiting the same layering is not odd, nor is it intriguing. This, truly, is a lot of fuss about absolutely nothing.

It does KINDA look like a railroad tie. I wish we could bring it back, I'd love to see what it really is... and you know, the bright thing in the distance above up does sorta look like a camp fire! Hahah

I read the fiirst article that was linked to in this thread, then the next 4-5 posts, and finally I skipped to the end, so I'm sorry if someone's mentioed this before.

In the first article that was linked to, the author claims that the picture is of a piece of wood photographed on Mars, and also claims that there are forests on Mars.
But later in the same article the author suggests (if not outright states) that the Martian landers are fakes. If so then what was it that took the picture of the wood?

One of the many things that infuriates me about CTs, is that they flim-flam between contradictory statements about the true nature of reality.
Some of these people genuinely seem to be unaware that they are contradicting themselves, but others seem to believe that suddenly and violently altering their position to one that contradicts their previous theory, actually validates their bizarre beliefs?..?..?

Which conspiracy are we meant to believe?
At one and the same time they claim that the moon landings are fake, and that NASA have secret pictures of moon-bases, alien artifacts, phenomena that contradict accepted science, etc,etc,.......take your pick.

So what is the message that they want us "sheeple" to infer from their attempts to "enlighten" us?
All the pictures that are released publicly by NASA are the result of fake moon missions, but that there have been "real" moon landings that are kept top secret?
If that's the case then why can't they believe that the moon mission pictures that we see are real, and that there are a bunch of other pictures that were taken on the same missions that are top secret?

Why invent a "fake moon landing" conspiracy if you also believe in "real moon landings"?

It's no wonder that many CTs don't seem to be able to hear the voice of reason, after all they don't even seem to be able to hear the words that issue from their own mouths.

Like djellison said, go visit the rovers' website and you'll find thousands of pictures like these or ones even more "intriguing" (for those of you who actually find this photo intriguing).

As no one seems to be presenting or defending any kind of ATM idea I will close this thread unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Alright.. what sort of geological formation (not including petrified wood) could cause this? What kind of rock might it be that the wind and sand made it appear this way?

As djellison said a few posts ago, it looks exactly like the layered rock that Opportunity has found all over the place, especially in the craters it has examined. This sort of rock was found very, very soon after the rover exited the lander, in Eagle Crater.

The only difference between this piece of rock, and the bits right next to it, is the lesser amount of loose soil that is on it. It's just exposed a bit more. Why? Who knows. Maybe a few mounds channeled prevailing winds so more blew away there. Maybe it's inclined a bit more so dust won't stay on it.

What ever happened to that "fence post" that the Phoenix probe took a picture of?

Oooh oooh perhaps NASA sent wood along on the mission in hopes that people would see the photo, then be even more interested in sending men to Mars! Yeah-yeah that is my half-baked theory and I'm sticking to it!
