Well Ive been thinking, alien spaceships are usually spinning and metallic
maybe they move by manipulating the magnetic fields in space. I think thats how they could also go so fast, and be able to hover in place. I believe this IS the way it works Hopefully Nasa has ther maglev stuff together by this year |

The question as to whether anyone has or has not seen an alien spaceship has not been resolved and is better discussed in the Conspiracy Theory section of this forum. If there were creditable evidence of an advanced propulsion system then it might be possible to reverse engineer the observations. From a fundamental scientific standpoint there is no indication manipulating magnetic fields could be used for propulsion. Comment: There is an interesting article in the February, 2009 issue of Scientific American on ion drives. Last edited by William; 14-February-2009 at 02:14 AM.. Reason: grammar |

You might be interested to read about lorentz force turning. Using the fact that a charged object moving through a magnetic field experiences forces at right angles to its direction of trael through the field, a space ship extending long highly charged cables could possibly ride or manouver on the magnetic field of the Milky Way.
Not entirely sure this is what your after, but maybe it could be something else to look into. |

Maglev is proven technology, but it requires magnetic fields about a million times stronger than Earth's magnetic field to produce useful thrust in Earth's atmosphere. Magnetic fields are weaker in 99.9999% of the volume of space in our solar system. Super conducting magnets help, but they stop super conducting in very strong magnetic fields. Airborne and space maglev thus is awaiting much stronger super conducting magnetic fields. If we ever develop spacecraft that travel at 99% of the speed of light. Maglev will be great for decelerating the space craft as it approaches most any solar system. At this enormous speed, lines of magnetic force are crossed at sufficient speed to produce one or two g of deceleration from a modest mag sail in a weak magnetic field. Sorry I have no link, but a search of magsail may turn up more details. Neil

I'm still hopefull on the idea of inducing a plasma field around a craft. Of course we will need to create a massive portable power source. It would work with a magnetic field, just one that is created by the craft and not the planet or surrounding stars.

On of the reasons I heard the rather cool, but completely impractical, Avro Aircar didn't work, was it was very unstable out of ground effect. Would spinning it help stability for a similar craft? This would be very nauseous for any passenger or pilot, but what if central cockpit was counter rotating?
It's a thought.

Now I'm picturing a piloting crew aboard a Frisbee. Talk about dizzy! I suppose it makes it easier to steer if you can time your blinks with the rotational speed.
(Yes, I'm not dumb--well, nevermind-- but of course you'd have a craft with a spinning body but a seperate, non spinning cockpit. that's just not nearly as entertaining to picture).

No, I imagine film footage of the test flight: the thing starts spinning faster and faster, with the hapless pilot struggling to stay coherent, and all of a sudden the clear canopy is abruptly obscured by a deposition of vomit. |

Don't forget the ground crew / observer's chain-reaction a-la 'Problem Child' (or any other movie that uses that cliché barf-gag)

Yeah, that WOULD be a problem. However, if you had a centeal cockpit say, and it was counter rotating at the right speed, it would be less vomit inducing. The trouble is if broke down, eh, barf-i-genic.

Okay, okay, I'll just spin the outer two thirds. Would that help?
Edit to add: Or an arrangement like a tank turret, only actually attached.

At the rotational speed needed to produce the energy required you would more likely see red then yellow/green as the pilots body hemorrhages.
