Default The Truth Behind NASA's UFO Videos

This isn't to proclaim a conspiracy. It's to document a resource, in the forum neighborhood were it is probably most needed.

It bears repeating. It's already been mentioned in the Universe Today section (and of course in Universe Today: The Truth About NASA’s UFO Vidoes [Videos]).

The resource is:
Popular Mechanics: Footage in the Sky: The Truth Behind NASA's "UFO" Videos

Quote:
A batch of raw footage from decades-old NASA missions shows zipping lights and strange objects in the sky. This footage, recently posted on YouTube, is renewing UFO conspiracy theories that the government is hiding knowledge about its interactions with intelligent life. Here, two astronauts talk about NASA's supposed coverup and what these clips really show.

Thanks, 01. I read the UT article already. I doubt it will curb the "enthusiasm" of the people that come here saying it is a coverup though.

This quote from the Popular Mechanics article was cool:

Quote:
UFO proponents tend to dismiss official responses from members of NASA, the Pentagon or any other government agency, but [astronaut] Runco says that even if there was an active coverup, no amount of coercion could prevent an astronaut—himself included—from laying claim to a confirmed sighting of an alien spaceship. "If I thought it was an intelligent craft, I'd be the first one to speak up," says Runco. "I'd want the credit: Mario Runco was the first person in history to conclusively document the existence of an extraterrestrial civilization. Why would I ever want to keep it secret?"

And there we have it! For all the people that think astronauts are hiding the existence of aliens, I give you Mario Runco!

I never thought of it that way, but it makes more sense then hiding it.

I don't suppose you noticed that M.I.B. was a satire of the whole UFO movement, did you?

To be fair, he did follow the comment with an "lol," and though TRUTH's track record might seem suspect to us, I'm willing to cut him some slack and believe he was kidding.

I never understood where the "NASA would hide evidence of UFOs at all costs" idea comes from.

They simply fit the "bad-guy" mold. A large organization with some things that aren't public, which allows for the imagined "endless resources" needed to be a super villain.

And the more super the villain, the better the "heroes" feel about themselves for toppling them.

I mean, no one could act like a hero if they organized to over throw the evil Uncle Bill's Corner Diner regime and finally shut down Ma and Pa's $20,000/year business. :-P

BA Blog: NASA UFOs explained:

Quote:
This was a clear case of some guy not doing any research at all, and then reaching for the most ridiculous and elaborate explanation he could think of. That’s typical for conspiracy theories.
But it’s almost always the wrong thing to do in, y’know, real life.
Isn’t it cool enough that we put people into orbit in multiton winged spacecraft so that they can do science and exploration and extend our knowledge of the Universe? Why do people insist on making up nonsense about this?

NASA is also 'The Government", and as we all know, the government is always hiding things from us.

Plus they also fit the stereotypical super villain mold. Unlimited power and resources. Best technology. But, as a power-hungry group, uncaring and cold. Willing to do anything to maintain power. Conveniantly able to keep anything they want secret (except from the elite few smart enough to see through their ruses!)

There are two kinds of conspiracies that work- the small secret conspiracy and the large public conspiracy. For example, a small number of people can arrange an assasination and manage to keep it secret. Or, for example, a large number of people can manipulate foreign policy for their own gain, just accept the PR hit when things come out in public, and rely on most people preferring not to believe whatever comes out. Both of those types of conspiracies have always existed and probably always will.

What can't work is the large secret conspiracy, and that is what keeping frequent alien encounters secret would have to be. I mean, we're talking many thousands of people over 50 years from radically different cultures consistently all agreeing to keep the secret despite the massive incentives for each individual to break the silence. There is no way that I can buy that everybody from some cosmonaut in the 60s to some personal assistant wandering through NASA ground control today would all have been conspiring together to cover up something as earth shattering as contact with aliens. Conspiracies just aren't that easy to pull off. Everybody who you rely on to keep the secret needs to have a huge personal incentive to keep it secret- like standing to face a death sentance. Even then many times small secret conspiracies have broken down many times over the years when one of the participants decided to come clean even though it meant complete ruin for them personally. No way that many people over that many years can keep a secret that well.

The Russians tracked the Apollos all the way to the Moon. They were looking for any sign of a spoof in the hope of catching us cheating. If the capsule hadn't gone there, they would have been trumpeting it to the whole world.

I once explained to a guy on USENET how the signals could be located by triangulation of the source signals. His next post started with "Okay, so it's impossible to determine by triangulation . . ."

And then humans have this stupid habit to become old and die.
What would stop anyone to confess his participation in the hoax on his deathbed...

Or leaving information "to be opened in the event of my death"? The fact that none have come forth from 400,000+ NASA employees (at the time of the Apollo 11 mission) and all the contractors and subcontractors also involved, has some weight with rational people. (But, of course, none with CTers.)

But, but... NASA is so evil that they would gleefully kill the families of anyone who made such a deathbed confession.
