From the BA's blog, but well worth repeating:

On another note, do any of our RF geeks know if there's an engineering reason for the five-second delay? It seems like more than I would expect.

It must be nice to be impervious to evidence that differs with your beliefs.
Or as it has been variously said, "It must be fun to live a life completely unburdened by reality." On another note, do any of our RF geeks know if there's an engineering reason for the five-second delay? It seems like more than I would expect. The article mentions PAO editing delay, in case someone says a naughty word. My recollection is that the PAO delay was eliminated back in Gemini days, hence Gene Cernan's unfortunate outburst on Apollo 10. MSFN and broadcast television overhead will add a lot, but five seconds does seem a little long. Maybe Baysinger's estimate is a little exaggerated. |

For reference, although it does not include Apollo 11, the June 1972 QST article, Houston, This is Apollo.., describes how two amateur radio operators picked up signals from Apollo 10, 12, 14, 15, with Apollo 15 being the first time voice was received from the CSM.
One station used an 18-foot dish, the other used a 12-foot one. The builder of the 12-foot dish system was told by several experts that reception of the Apollo transmitter with such a small dish couldn't be done. By the way, the article is accompanied by the warning: Important! FCC regulations prohibit disclosure of the content of communications not intended for the public. Thus, it is illegal to inform the press or any other third party of the content of information received directly from the Apollo communications link. |
