However, Dr Ken Skeldon and Dr Martin Hendry are preparing a roadshow to take to schools and science festivals with the help of a £10,000 grant from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, a government-funded body.
Dr Hendry said most of the conspiracy theory science was flawed, and it was relatively simple for people to work this out. "It's not really rocket science. If you have a look at some of the books and internet sites the principal arguments stem from misunderstandings about how science works on the moon, rather than on the earth."

Glasgow scientists to show moon landings were genuine

It was a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind - or was it? Ever since that famous day when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, people have claimed it was all an elaborate hoax. But now scientists from the University of Glasgow are to tour schools nationwide in a bid to show pupils that the moon landings were very much a work of Science Fact.

Neil Armstrong made one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind in July 1969 when he became the first man to set foot on another planet. They are arguably the most famous TV pictures ever broadcast.

But as soon as pictures of the first men on the moon were seen around the globe people began suggesting they were not real. The Stars and Stripes apparently flutter in the lunar breeze, although it should be an airless atmosphere. Other stars should be seen but are not visible.

And there are questions over why dust was seen to fly from feet and the lunar rover's wheels.

Journalist Dominik Diamond said: "It's not a case of could they, they had to. They were losing the Cold War and when they had to divert attention away from Vietnam and go to people, 'look over here' and this is why, when America is involved in its second Vietnam, in Iraq, all of a sudden we're going to Mars."

But there are perfectly logical scientific answers to all these questions, and scientists from the University of Glasgow are about to blast off on a tour of schools across the country to tell pupils that it was all for real.

Dr Martin Hendry from the University of Glasgow said: "It's a clear example of trying to apply scientific reasoning which works on earth but doesn't on the moon because it's such a different enviornment."

But down the years everyone at NASA has been at pains to deny the cynics' claims, saying the whole story is a conspiracy theory too far. In the near future it may very well be that the conspiracy theorists turn their attention from the Moon to Mars.

Good initiative and will work fine in Scotland and the rest of the UK. However, I'm less convinced about the US. Not because of any lower level of intelligence there, but due to a higher perceived willingness to believe in "Powers that be" Cover-ups.

Well, you're probably right about the "lower" part, but it's tripartite. General reasoning ability being lowered due to

1. Poor education.
2. Influence of fundamentalist religions.
3. (hate to say this but) Certain areas of the US that have decided that isolation is their best weapon against the encroachment of the forces of sin.

Put them all together and we're back in, which century? But it sure isn't the 21st.
