Other then being an astro-nut for over five years now, I do a fair bit of writing when those physics courses don't get in the way (even had one UT article earlier this summer, hopefully the first of many more!). Oh yes and before I forget, am I the only one who has the date I last visited as "12-31-1969"? Makes me feel like Colt...

Hi to old and new friends!

I'm 45 and work as a meteorologist in Oklahoma. I have many other interests, which include languages (both human and computer), computers, geography, and astronomy, to name a few. I've been a member of the BABB for a year or so, I guess.

The BABB was a significant, but enjoyable, strain on my spare time, and I'm concerned that the BAUT board may be too much for me to keep track of, but we'll see. I like the new BB software, so maybe I'll survive.

Hi everyone old and new, (including Project Orion who I never got chance to chat with on BABB. Please stick around a while.)

I'm 38, born - as the handle suggests - in west Yorkshire England, married 3 years, no kids, none planned.

I did a degree in electrical engineering, currently I work for a biggish IT firm supporting geographic information systems.

My interests are pretty varied – as well as astronomy and astrophotography I’m into archaeology and ancient history. I’ve done brief stints on an archaeological dig, and still once a year don 12-century clothing and live the life of a peasant at a Viking reconstruction village near York, including spit-roasting a pig.

I enjoy travelling, particularly if it has a historical or archaeological element to it – most recently, a visit to Cambodia. (Go there, incidentally. It’s a beautiful country with great people.)

Love music, both listening to and playing.

I'm a teacher of math and physics in highschool and really enjoy discussing astronomy alsthough most of what is discussed here is way over my head.

I also just got high speed which is way better than the dialup service I had! I think that's the real reason the websites decided to merge...I'm just that important! Ha!

Wow, I had no idea there were so many kids my age on this sight! I'm a 15 year old high school student from Washington. The state, not the place with all the republicans. I'm really interested in theoretical physics, particularly the idea of the higgs field and higgs particle. I also enjoy astronomy, and am trying to start an astrophysics club at my school.

Anyone here have an opinion on string theory? I think we should suspend judgment until the LHC turns on and we can know for sure.

Hi, I'm Steve from the BABB. While I wasn't active on the UT bulletin board, I do have Mr. Cain's excellent site bookmarked and it's one of those sites that I check out on a daily basis. I look forward to interacting with the UT regulars.

I joined Dr. Plait's Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board the morning after listening to him "debate" the fear-mongering Nancy Lieder who claimed that a rogue planet was inbound with catastrophic results for this planet. I was impressed with the Bad Astronomer's performance as he thrashed someone who didn't have to rely on reality and joined the following morning. My initial motivation was to help the BABB regulars reassure those who were anxious about Lieder's Planet X but I soon found myself addressing other facets of pseudoscience as well. As a former believer in things like flying saucers, the Bermuda Triangle and other woo, I strive to convey critical thinking when these various subjects come up and you'll find me more often or not in those type of discussions. Prior to the debate I was (and still am) a frequent visitor to the Bad Astronomy main site and recommend those here who haven't to check it out.

I just read a book you might be interested in, Steve. It's called The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan. The first half is about the extreme unlikelihood of flying saucers, alien abductions, etc. and the second half about the importance of critical thinking skills in the modern world.

G'day mates. My name is Russ, as you may have guessed. I live in the Cincinnati, Ohio metrosprawl. I've just become a grandpa for the sixth time, a little girl, Madyson, 6.5lbs (3 kilos for you metric types).

I have some mates & a niece downunda in the Brizzzbun area, others in Tazzie, so I know how you lot work.

I'm not so sure I like this new merger. There were 900 & change people (members) looking at the board a few minutes ago. I feel lost in the crowd. I don't care for that feeling.

I really enjoyed cozy, friendly air of the BABB community. I guess I'll hang here for a while and see if that sense of community develops.

That was a bit of an error, we had the last 24 hours of visitors showing as "active". It's actually only 100 or so currently active. And it's totally natural to have a large group of people checking out the new board.

Having a small community is nice because everyone is very close and familiar, but it can get lonely sometimes. Especially when you see some poor people who post a great topic or question and are met with total silence because there just aren't enough people around to chat.

With a large community, you can get a little lost in the crowd, but there's always someone to talk to. Even obscure topics will turn into lively conversations. I personally prefer the larger groups, just because I like getting exposed to so many ideas, etc. But then, maybe that's just my attention deficit disorder showing.

I have read it Rebecca and highly recommend it. Sagan is missed.

Regarding this larger community, I like it myself and think that once people get used to this new board and become familiar with one another the same sense of community that we had on the two former boards will develop.
