I'm Scott, a 58 year old high school educated route driver from Maryland. I don't expect I'll be able to contribute much here; our high school didn't even offer physics, trig or calculus courses. I have always been fascinated by space; I've spent many hours in my 58 years looking at the night sky. I came here to learn, even though a lot of the terminology and mathematical formulas are totally foreign to me. If I ask stupid questions, please indulge my ignorance; I'm trying to keep my brain from turning to mush! Though, if you want to talk Strats or Teles in the off-topic area, I'm good to go!

Hi Fendercaster / Scott.
Welcome to BAUT.
Sir, no questions asked here at BAUT, we define as 'stupid'!
You'll find plenty of help here. And plenty of fun too.
And plenty to drool over. Once you've ventured into the Astrophotography section of the board.
why does your username, remind me of a guitar?!

Anybody with a name like that is welcome to an open minded forum. Questions are like riffs' - you don't know whether it is good or bad until all the music comes together.

I have posted ALOT of stupid questions and a lot of stupid answers...and I have never properly introduced myself either -

I'm a 5-something year old physicist with minors in math and chemistry. I have worked as an analytical chemist, programmer, thermal chemist, system manager, physical chemist, rocket technician, engineer. The funnest projects I have worked on involved building neuro-nets for computer tomography, developing air bag explosives, testing programs for rocket guidance systems, and ultrasonic data collection systems for very powerful lasers. I don't program any more, or very little, but I'm still involved in unique testing and test method development, which I enjoy.

As an alternative theorist (as I am known on this board); I pretty much wear my hat backwards, or sideways, or any way other than the way a scientist normally would. The paradox being that even though I think mainstream theories are wrong to the core; we can use the mathematics and predictions from these theories to successfully engineer space and planetary probes...most of the time.

Smile Hello

Hi everyone.

I live in rural Alaska (northern Susitna Valley from mod PetersCreek).

I've had a lifelong interest in astronomy, astrophysics, etc. My poor kids grew up listening to me, but they've also developed at least a minor interest in earth/space sciences.

Yes, I've been "ashed on" recently by our busy little volcano.

Default Bad Astronomy book - Correction re Precession

Hello Bad Astronomy -

This is my first post but I have studied astronomy for many years - especially ancient astronomy and the mechanics of the earth's motion

Someone recently called to my attention to the book "Bad Astronomy" and a problem understanding precession - on page 55, where it says:

"Right now the Earth's north axis points toward the Sun in June. But due to precession, 13,000 years from now - half a precession cycle- the Earth's north pole will point AWAY from the Sun in June and TOWARD it in December. The seasons will be reversed relative to our present calendar."

The author must have been up too late when he was thinking about precession. I assume someone has told him the Gregorian Calendar is designed to track the equinox as close as possible (only losing one day per 3200 years) and therefore the winter solstice will still fall in June in 13,000 years just as it does today (in the Northern Hemisphere).

Cheers

Polestar

From context I suspect you mean summer solstice.

As for the rest, I expect it's a matter of simplifying the explanation to make it easy to get an idea of the concept even though the explanation is wrong1, another description would be that 13000 years from now, Capricorns will be born in June.

As a young person, I looked right and became a land surveyor, but if I had looked left I wonder if I would have become an astrophysicist?

I live in Maine and have always enjoyed physics and astronomy.

Hello all,
So happy to see this site. I am a born again atheist. I live in NYC. Soon to be 40 and live to learn. Am a member, not dues paying, of the NY skeptics. Have been to see the Amazing Randi lecture and read a book or two by M. Shermer.
Found an amazing U Tube video set by a Rhawn Joseph PhD. I was bored and looking for educational material to watch. Found one that was pure science... or it seemed to me. I am not a scientist. Then as I looked at the site further BrainMind.com I found some odd stuff. References to 2012 etc. So I did some looking around. This guy sounds legit but some of his stuff is off the wall. In doing research on him I found no reference on the James Randi site. Then went to Bad Astronomy which led me here. Anyone heard of Dr. Joseph?
Feel free to email me if you are an admin, reply here or send me a note on yahoo chat to reference.

Welcome to BAUT, bubba444! A search using the google search box on top of the forum gives many results for Joseph 2012, perhaps what you are looking for is among it? If not, you can ask in the Q&A forum, where more people will read your question.

Hi raketenflugplatz, welcome to BAUT.

There are many people here from non-English speaking countries, and judging from this post there won't be any problem with that, I'm sure!

Welcome to BAUT, TB.

If I might make a suggestion? Limit your use of text jargon such as 'l8r'. Most people here prefer not to read it.

sms-/text-/l33t-speak is discouraged here as a serious impediment to reading especially as many members don't have English as their first language and it's meaningless gibberish to them.

If you want anyone to bother reading what you write, it's your responsibility to write comprehensively.
