Default How do you report Bad Posts?

Prompted by the this thread, which I would like to bring to the attention of a moderator (presumably for deletion), what is the best/simplest/most effective way to report a post?

On some other boards, each post has a button next to it which, if clicked, reports the post to the mods. Is there any functionality similar to this on this board?

Right next to the post # is a red triangle. Click on that and you can report to all the mods/admin. the offending post...

Perhaps making this sticky might be an idea, at least until Fraser's idea of spamkilling deputies can be implemented.

It seems we're getting flooded by spam today, at least in babbling.

There were a few days when we were getting 10 spams/day. Since then there's been a pause and a resurgence. More people are using commercial spam-bots to boost their web exposure.

It´s funny. Trying to access the link in the OP, I get this message:

Argos, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1)Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2)If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

I found myself in the same position, Agros.

It means the post/thread has been removed from the public area of BAUT, but had not (at the time you accessed it) been hard deleted (if it had been hard deleted, there would have been a different message).

One of my modes, when handling spam (and similar) is to remove the spam first, then check out the member who did the spamming, ban them, and (last of all) delete the spam. When there is a big queue of spam to handle, it can take quite a while from start to end (and sometimes, I confess, I don't get it all done in one sitting ... there have been days when the volume of spam is just overwhelming ...)

Well Satori, that's why NASA's Department of Misinformation pays them the big bucks.

I just thought of another use for the report post. If we see a post that we just want to bring to the attention of admin/mods can we use it as well.

My thoughts are posts that could be suggestions for board changes, posts that could be moved to another forum, threads that could be made sticky.

I have not hit the report button yet; does it have space for a little note on the reason for reporting?

This may be easier than admin/mods reading many posts and then moving/stickying or finding ideas for board changes.

My guess: they'd prefer not. I think the report-post mechanism sends a message to all mods and admins. It's "HEY! Someone, anyone, look at this article now!" It's urgent.

For other issues, more mellow methods should probably be used, like contacting one mod. Or, chatting with the community members about something right in this About BAUT forum.

Click the icon to look at what it says. There is space for comments. Nothing happens until you later click the Send Report button. There's a note there that tells you to keep it to urgent matters:

Please only use the "report posts" feature to draw our attention to posts that are a problem. It sends emails to every moderator and administrator and creates a thread in the admin area, so it's not something to be used lightly. (That being said, don't be timid about reporting a post that you think is a problem. We don't have enough moderators to review all the new posts promptly, so the more eyes the better.)

Thank you for the information. I was afraid to hit the button until now. Some sites I have been on, when I hit the report button it just automatically sends a report.

Well , if you are sure that there is a problem on a certain posts that has violated the BAUT Rules by a certain member, and needs the attention of the Mods & Admin, there's nothing to be afraid of in clicking it.

Yeah, that's what they told me too. I'm getting better at using the mouse with my left hand, but I still can't open a bottle.

But seriously, if you feel there is a problem, just report it. I've gotten positive reactions when it was indeed considered a problem, and when it was not. The mods simply appreciate it when you help them to focus their attention. You are doing just that; the mods are the ONLY ones who make subsequent decisions, or decide not to do anything.

When I report a post, it takes forever for the message to be sent. Can something be done to speed up the process?

To solve this, we've moved to a faster server.

Ok, that's not really why, but it will hopefully also make this operation faster.

Just reported some spam. It seemed like it might have been a bit faster, though there was a very noticeable pause.
