Default Senior & Junior members

I've been on this board a few months. I'm astonished to find I'm listed as a Senior Member!! Wow, I'm so flattered. It's not often I get any respect. And I"m not even an astronomer!

So how does it work?

When a Junior member is approaching his 100th post we hold a big convention of all the senior members at Phil's secret retreat on the Big Island of Hawaii, and over the course of the night we review the posts, and PMs that have been sent by the Junior member. If all are in agreement, we promote the person in question to Senior member. If any one member dissents, we change the status to "member" instead of "senior member".

These feasts are not to be missed! I hope you like poi.

So, is there an Initiation rite? Do we get to walk across lava or anything??

You have to denounce the Moon Hoax on an oath which makes the freemasons look like a bunch of amateurs.....

Ooops, did I just let the cat out of the bag?

I would have been there, but I got hung up in airport security. They couldn't believe that somebody could look that much like Santa Claus without being up to something!

The only part of the initiation rite that we 4000 plusers are allowed to mention is that the new senior member must burn his/her first disinformation agent check.

Thing is, the volcano isn't used so much in the initiation itself as much as it is if someone fails to garner enough support among the seniors. You don't want to have been the guest of honor at that particular cerimony, let me tell you.

Yes! Mai Tai's all around (at least for those of us of age). There's also a bit of holdover from the old BABB days as we secretly celebrate the promotions to Bad Postdoc that are no longer advertised here.

Which of course qualified you as a practicing BABBer, which, since you were now only practicing, put you right back to square one, as Gripes of Wraith can attest to.

Talking sacrificial....

Since when do the rites no longer include the sacrificial virgins thrown in to the volcano to appease Pele?

You are confusing the ceremony for the twenty thousandth post ceremony in which the former soccer great Pelé, is shown the constellation Virgo with a telescope at the top of the volcano.

OK Tobin, if you must know, the rooms had cockroaches and the booze had turned to vinegar. I don't know why anyone goes to these things.

Did anyone have a video camera at the victim sacrifice,... er senior member vote? The video might sell. Maybe Phil could do a live podcast at the next one? On second thought, I guess we'd have to kill anyone who actually heard it, eh?

Oh geez, not after the last time someone tried that. We decided that "What happens in the volcano stays in the volcano". * **

* Yeah. Vegas ripped us off for the slogan. That's the sort of thing that happens when you bring recording devices.

** "Who Let the Dogs Out" was never meant to be released to the general public. We considered it too inhumane after the first few initiations. Imagine our surprise when it turned out that the general public liked it, though thankfully briefly.

Actually, he's a senior member (I know the memories may be fuzzy, but YOU voted for him), so you can tell him without killing him. Just not here.
