This thread is sort of an exaggeration, but to be honest, I am a bit jealous of Dr Plait, given what I heard at TAM. A lot of women seemed to be talking about him saying how they thought the red hair/thinning hair/wiskery facial hair/30/40-ish look is really hot. No... I am serious.

Now, here I am, at 24. I'm a young guy who is supposed to be in my prime. I'm in decent shape... not athletic but decent... I have all my hair... And yet the BA's getting a lot of oogling. Seriously...what is up with that?

I tip my hat to you, sir. But don't think there's not a tinge of envy to that.

Speaking as a woman, I can only say that I find intelligence to be very attractive. I can also say categorically that what women find attractive is not always what men think women find attractive.

Well, speaking as a man, I can say that I find intelligence to be very attractive too.

I think that many members on this forum, almost by definition, are going to be atypical examples.

Otherwise, though, I can say that I wouldn't be surprised if what you say was 100% correct.

Uncommon affinity for math, jokes, baseball, beer, cold weather, machines, and drying my back on the bed; laissez-faire fashion, and inoperative volume control on all ports--works for me. At least, one person finds it attractive. Maybe. Hmmm.....

I agree with you. There seems to me a big difference between what I find attractive in men and when men seem to think will attract me.

I think that gentleness and intelligence are most important. I think there is a cuteness in shy intelligence that is very attractive and very sexy... (can I sexy in this forum??)

Just a pet peeve re the language (your example shows it well): "as" implies one is assuming a role, the corollary being if one doesn't include that phrase, one is speaking "as" something else.

Sure.

Said that right, Fred?

...Why did you target my post? Gillianren said "Speaking as a woman..."

Stupid discriminators. -_-

Either way, I don't care. It's the American language, we don't have to make sense! We just cobble words together and somehow we understand them! So attack it all you want, because it doesn't matter -- we'll CONTINUE to butcher the English language, from now unto infinity! And you know what? You can't do a darned spittin' thing about it!

MWAHAHAHAHA!

My "speaking as a woman" as well as Lonewulf's "speaking as a man" meant that we were speaking from the perspective specific to a woman or a man as opposed to just speaking as a person--or speaking as any other subdivision of "people" we fit into.

Well, take it from a man, I knew where you were both coming from.

Just one of a list of pet peeves about the English language.

But I guess multiple meanings and inconsistencies give the poets out there grist for their mills.

BTW, I don't pick on Gillianren due to something called "general principles". And because she's nice.

No there's nothing wrong with having your own ideas of what is attractive. Phill is a cool guy whom I would definitely have a few drinks with or invite to a BBQ if he lived anywhere near me.

But will you people* please start being a bit more consistent and logical in what you find attractive? It's driving us (men) crazy... seriously. Being a bit shy intellectual is okay, to a point and things are more complicated and it can be overdone and some things seem like they should work but then....

Look... just do this: I propose that all the women in the world should be frank about what they like and it then can be fed into a big computer and a list can be generated of what the most common things are and given numeric values of importance. And the standard deviation assessment should be made of what portion likes what and to what degree and then a good formula can be created. Yes, I know all women are different, but if we can come up with some general trends and determine how it breaks down in the population....

Well it would just make things a lot easier for many of us!

*(women... and I know that "you people" is offensive... but I'm frustrated)

Drbuzz0, it would be nice if it there was formula to what was attractive, life would be so much easier.

Women think so, too.

The problem is, what one woman finds attractive isn't necessarily what another finds attractive. What's more, my type tends to be dark-haired men, but my current's hair is sort of a dirty blond. Sometimes, someone you wouldn't normally be attracted to just strikes you.

And Phil spells his name with only one "l."

At the top left of any page on the BAUT forum you will find the "Bad Astronomy" logo (the Universe Today logo is at the top right). Clicking on it will take you to the BAs home page. If you click on the"Q&BA" link, you can see several videos of the BA.
