Default Phill Plait: Still an astronomer?

Hi, I just had a question about Dr. Plait which I have been wondering about since The Amazing Meeting, which I attended this January.

I realize that Dr. Plait has had a passion for astronomy, for educating the public and for science in general for some time, but it seems recently that he has been getting a lot of attention for his status as a "sex symbol." Especially to intellectual and geeky women.

It begs the question how this may have effected Dr. Plait's ability to work as an astronomer, given the time constraints he surely faces. I'd imagine that an increasing amount of his time is spent doing promotions and photo shoots, dodging the paparazzi and his adoring fans and managing his empire of fame and fortune. I know that it's not as easy as it seems, partying, playing, traveling and all the other things that a well known starlet/playboy does.

I was just wondering how Dr. Plait feels about this. If he is able to continue his work in astronomy amid the pressures of being a "beautiful person." I'd imagine that the all the flocking groupies, though flattering, must get a bit old over time.

In his recent blog he did mention man love, not that there's anything wrong with that.

He's a bit too pasty for me (his legs are whiter than mine, and that's saying ALOT), and of course the whole wrong gender thing.

Yeah, I smell a sock puppet. I can even imagine who it might be.

Heh. No, Buzz0 is no sock puppet. There are pictures of him online even, if you search for TAM5 on Flickr. :-)

As for his question, well, I'm not sayin'.

Phil! Are you suggesting you have a secret admirer among the (retired) astronaut corps?

Ouch

I think Phil is sexy. Except for his hair. And his nose. And his eyes. And his mouth. And his voice. And that he's a guy.

Good thing he's one hell of a good Bad Astronomer

This has all the indications of being a subject for a Broadway production.

I can imagine the first song after the overture (you know the tune):

Phil Plait,
Superstar!
Just how bad an astronomer
Do you think you are?

Wow. That kind of doesn't scan at all. But that's okay.

I think you're cute, too, Phil.

Well, if you put in enough eighth notes and bridge enough vowels, it works. Sort of like what Handel did with "amen" at the end of his best-known oratorio.

Time to dust off my music notation software.

Is the purpose of this thread to demonstrate that an ad hominem is not always a bad thing?

I find it difficult to concentrate on science during the Q&BA videos because of Phil's unique man-bait physique.

As I recall, it's some sort of Renaissance-era diagram of the solar system. (I supplied it, which is why I'm jumping in here with an answer.)
