This feature seems to go back only 500 posts---can older posts be retrieved?

I don't think so, the 500 post retrieval limit has been on as long as I can remember. You can search for "Ascending Order" and get the first 500 posts. Or, search a particular forum, and get only the posts in that forum, or main forum
