If you interact rather than reporting it encourages the trolls and the posts don't come to the attention of the mods.

Gosh, I stay away for a couple of days and there is a party without me.

Crosscountry, if you think I've done something wrong, please report it to the Administrators or the owners of this board. I answer to them. If they wish to take away my "powers", so be it.

May you someday enjoy the experience of moderating a board like this.

Now that was a rude comment. Wishing something that bad on another poster is just beyond cruel.

It could happen too. All I did was complain twice, and now look at me.

I've never thought of BAUT as a Police state. Maybe a Led Zeppelin state.

Well in this case, I, for one, welcome our led Zeppelin overlords.

That was me. Serial sock puppet. I lost connectivity shortly afterwards and I'm only now able to finish up the cleanup. Chalk it up to yet more inefficiency, comrades.

[Borrowed from an old MAD Magazine sketch]

Do not try to change the website; I am on both of them.

The title of this thread has been bothering me (and no, not for those serious reasons) and I finally figured out what it was reminding me of....

Prosecutor: Over Macho Grande?
Witness: No. I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande.

Not to mention that the "I don't think you will be here for very long" is, technically speaking, a rules violation. However, given the posts I saw, the conclusion is so obvious that it doesn't make sense to sanction someone for stating it.

I recall reading an excerpt of some parody of 1984 where the government functioned about as efficiently as such governments do. They were completely out of rats to threaten the protagonist with and were desperately trying to convince him that he was actually afraid of spiders, because they had plenty of those.

All I can say is you better keep Swift, or they might ask me next.

Or worse, Paul Beardsley. Think about THAT.

Fortunately, real world governments always have a substantial element of that parody.

I miss that sometimes.
Couple of things -

- I think Swift's moderation was appropriate given the nasty comments.

- I think forums are better, healthier, and more robust when there's a bit most leeway than having to polish one's manners to a_very_fine gleam.

- I think, therefore I am.

- I've yet to see moderators here be dorks, unless that word is being used in the older, pocket pencil-protector use, in which case about half of us fit that bill...

- I believe the stringent requirements imposed on the ATM section, while appropriate to the fielding of new ideas throughout the scientific community, are nevertheless unfamiliar to most ATM posters. As a result, they get miffed, say not so nice things, and find themselves temporarily banned to afford them the time necesssary to cool off and read the rules.

So, in conclusion - Swift - good job. Moose - I hear you, and if we were all rigorous scientists, yours would work. Cross - I'm sorry, man. While I do see where your coming from with respect to the rigorous, I also see this as a fairly simple case of getting nasty with a moderator, which isn't far off from taking a poke at a policeman, so...

I'll try to find a topic this morning that'll capture our attention as much as this thread has!

I think you didn't quite get what I said. It wasn't a suggestion. It was mild remeniscing to the BA's pre-merger board: BABB. BA's moderation style was... very much to the point. It worked very well, though. Same general mix of people, but a firmly held standard of behavior.

We have the luxury of giving warnings. BA didn't. We delt with it. It's not like the "Be nice" rule is a hard one to follow.
