The good old days . . . when belligerence was rewarded with a solid boot off the site.

I miss the screaming.

I remember when it didn't even take much to say good bye. One good back and forth would get you banned for good.

Yep, we had to hold the string real tight or we'd lose our internet connection and we'd have to post in a blizzard, after walking 20 miles to get to punchcard machine to type our message. And we liked it that way!

I remember the old days of 75 baud. Man I was glad when 110 became available... and when you got banned from a forum in those days, they had a bouncer do it with some physical authority. You'd get the self destruct sequence sent to your teletype, and it would be over.

You had an awl?!?! You were darned lucky. All I had was a feather quill and some oak gall ink, and I had to wait days for the tannin to eat through the jacquard card.

Ever knapp a punchcard from a slab of flint? Punching straight holes was a real chore.

...perhaps the Banned thread should be permanently locked, all Admin/Mod decisions made in silence and if anyone questions why someone got suspended or banned they can inquire of Admin/Mod privately.

Seriously folks -- a lot of time is spent at this board discussing this issue repeatedly, over and over. It's not an asset to this forum, imo.

On the contrary...in my opinion self reflection is a very important aspect of this board.

Coolest woman I ever knew was a programmer in the days of punched tape. I couldn't get a program to run, so she read the punched tape by eye, stuck a bit of tape over one row of holes, took a hole punch to another section, and handed the tape back to me.
"That'll run now," she said.
It did.

Ouch. I was just going to say that I can understand how that wouldn't be that bad.

"back in the olden days" when I was first learning computers. We were doing punch cards. Since the cards were read optically, we could "draw" the holes in the cards with a #2 pencil instead of punching holes. We didn't have card punch machines. (actually, my awl comment wasn't too far off )

So; you got familiarized with the patterns that you get. Kind of like braille, but in vertical rows.
We would then get the run, and a paper tape backup. Out of curiosity, I would "read" the holes to see how it matched up.

That beats the guy I used to work with who could program in octal machine code. (I could do it a bit, but only easy stuff like short relative jumps.)

really? I thought those conversations were kept private for a reason. All the common man gets is the occasional post on who's been banned/suspended.
