First of all, "SolusLupus". My name's right there, visible, at all times.

Second of all, if everyone misunderstands you, maybe it is not our side of the communication that is the problem, neh?

I think misunderstanding are often the root of problems.

For example, I was unaware I was even responding to anything you said in this thread. Except for the bus analogy, which I appropriated, I wasn't thinking of you when I posted.

You did start the bus thing, right?

(goes back and checks)

Yes, you started the bus analogy.

But seriously. I wasn't even talking about you in any of my post.

Do I take it that this degeneration into general bickering for the last page and a half is an indication that this thread has run it's course? Should I close it or issue a general warning for people to knock it off?
I think it's clear who the Principal Offenders are here.

Be Nice.

Here's another to add:

• A user could prefer to read posts more than make them, which may make them seem to be absent when they really aren't.

Heck, a lot of the threads I'm interested in are very, very old posts.

I'm a very slow and deliberate thinker. Sometimes I wind up connecting things or threads that seem totally irrelevant to each other, and as a result I wind up going through the archives for hours on end.

An unfortunate side-effect is that I can easily seem completely inane or unaware of present/relevant topic matter. I can see where that can be odd.

(But I do read replies, I assure you. All of them.)

I love the archives!

Just don't activate old topics.

I agree.

Well, unless there is a really good reason to bring one back to the surface or there's something important to add to it.

Probably better to start a new one then. Most people won't remember or care there is a musty old topic out there. But an old thread resurfacing, that can be catastrophic.

OK, IMHO.....

There are those, it seems, that it is so important that there point of view be accepted, that they can become agitated when someone has the audacity to not accept their point of view in which they have invested their own emotions. I have seen vindictive vituperation be vociferously expressed over an idea. How sad, they may miss a kernel of truth in the opposing opinion.

I make it a point to learn new things every day as a pattern for my own existence, and sometimes I am granted an epiphany. What could be better in life.....at least for me.

Credit for that one goes to Socrates. The orignal Greek philosopher Socrates that is.

BTW. My fave Socrates quote? When he was being executed for "corrupting the youth" (ie making them think) and was about to be forced to drink hemlock, his friends gathered round to see him. One friend was particularly upset and wailed : “O Socrates how it grieves me to see you die so undeservedly!”

Socrates replied : “My dear Apollodorus, would you rather see me die deservedly?” ;-)

I must take issue with your attribution of Nereid's quotations.

The first one is a praphrase of the sentence μηδέν άγαν (mēdén ágan) - nothing too much -, which was inscribed into the Temple of Apollon in Delphi, Greece.

The paradox is ascribed to Epimenides of Crete: Epimenides is a Cretan. Cretans always lie.

The third quotation, of course, is attributed to Socrates, Xenophon's Apology being the source.

Off topic a bit, but it's not a paradox. Or it's a trivially flawed one as expressed.

If "Cretans always lie" is itself a lie, then it says nothing at all about the truthfulness of "Epimenides is a Cretan". That assertion is logically plausible if Cretans _sometimes_ lie. (The converse of "X always Y" isn't "X never Y".)

Alternately, if Epimenides is lying about being Cretan (also possible), the second assertion ("Cretans always lie") simply doesn't apply to him.

True. AFAIK, the exact formulation is Epimenides, the Cretan, says, All Cretans always lie. That he is a Cretan is not part of the statement but a fact known beforehand and independent of Epimenides. So, basically, "this statement is false"...

But in that case, it could be that only this particular Cretan lies.

Or that the speaker is lying about what Epimenides says. Then all bets are off. *chuckle*

I remember when that was the only rule, and if memory serves, it was an unwritten one at that.

It was just after the merger, before the combined rules had been fleshed out.

The rule was written explicitly in the post explaining why the rules were not finalized.

If Epimendides is a Cretan, and he states, "Cretans always lie," then that statement itself is a lie, and the only logical conclusion is that Cretans sometimes lie.

Sorry I missed it, Arneb. It's ok to edit the actual post with an ETA (edit to add) to preserve the original content if it's been out there for any length of time.

This thread obviously has outlasted its usefulness and is now just for jokes and bad behavior. Closed.
