See if anyone can figure this out cause I found no one that can.
3 guys rent a motel room that is 30$. They give 10$ each. The motel manager says he made an error and the room is only 25 so he gives them back 5$. They each take 1$ and leave 2$ as tip. So they each gave 10$ were returened 1$ each so in reality they spent 9$ each. 9 X 3 = 27 plus 2$ tip is 29$ What happened to the last dollar.

Final Reckoning:
Cost of Room: $8⅓ each: $8⅓ x 3 = $25 Cost of Tip: $⅔ each: $⅔ x 3 = $2 Pocket Money Left Over: $1 each: $1 x 3 = $3 Total: $30 In your final sum you have omitted the $3 they still have in their pockets and substituted in its place a duplicate of the $2 tip: $25 + $2 + $3 + $2 - $3 = $29

This is just another variant of the Meal question
Three men go into a restaurant and have a meal for £1.00 a head. Because the soup was unavailable . . . ![]() Soouuupp aaaghhh [/Homer Simpson] The manager refunds the men 50p On the way over the waiter pockets 20p and shares the 30p out between the three men. Now each man has paid 90p 3 x 90p = £2.70 Plus the 20p the waiter pockets = £2.90 Where is the missing 10p Stay tuned for the answer after these short messages ![]()

Welcome back
This is how it was told to me (For the room example just multiply everything by 10) Imagine each person has 10 10p coins on them They order the meal and hand over 30 10p coins There is no soup so the manager takes out 5 10p coins, leaving 25 10p coins in the cash register. The waiter takes 2 10p coins and gives the three men the 3 10p coins which they share out, so each man has a 10p coin. Re cap 25 10p coins in the cash register 2 10p coins in the waiter's pocket 3 10p coins between the three men 25 + 2 + 3 = 30 All monies accounted for. ![]()

Or, more concisely, your £2.70 includes the £2.50 the manager keeps plus the 20p the waiter keeps but omits the 30p the men keep. In effect, the men don't just pay the manager, they also pay the waiter.

Or the short version: you added the 20p the waiter kept instead of subtracting it. 2.50 = 3.00-.50 = 3.00-.30-.20 ~= 3.00-.30+.20
